When I heard that had multiple myeloma—which my dad died of—I wondered if he'd get stem cell treatment despite having voted & campaigned against stem cell therapy. My dad was too old for this option. Lucky for Scalise, hypocrisy is no barrier

Jake Sherman: STEVE SCALISE will be out of DC until Feb…getting a stem-cell transplant.

House GOP has 220-seat majority. Bill Johnson is out Jan. 21. After that, w Scalise out, GOP will have a bare bones 218-seat majority

2/ Jeffery con’td:

Hope he recovers. But it's yet another ex of how ppl are anti-choice, or anti-science, til it's their lives on the line

Did he truly blv that discarded embryos from IVF should either never happen or never be used for treatment? Or was it a pose

If one truly blvs life begins at conception & there's no excuse to ever not let a zygote come to term—that to prevent that from happening is murder—well then to accept stem cell therapy is particip in murder.

That's bunk of course

CarlataOld,
@CarlataOld@mas.to avatar

@GottaLaff
I don't think anyone argues that an embryo isn't alive. In fact, there is life at the time of conception. The argument is (supposedly) about whether it's a baby and should not be destroyed.

GottaLaff,
@GottaLaff@mastodon.social avatar

@CarlataOld Potential for life, not life.

mogul,
@mogul@mastodon.cloud avatar

@GottaLaff Scalise is an absolute tool, but I don't see hypocrisy here... Treatment of multiple myeloma using a stem cell transplant does not use stem cells from discarded fetuses, which is the specific thing he voted against, right?

IdahoLark,
@IdahoLark@syringa.social avatar

@mogul @GottaLaff He is using his own stem cells for this treatment. But he is still an awful human for opposing stem cell research and treatments using other sources. I bet he wouldn't have hesitated to use some that originated from a fetal line long ago if it would save his or a loved one's life.

GottaLaff,
@GottaLaff@mastodon.social avatar

@IdahoLark @mogul In answer to that, Jeffery said:

Clara Jeffery:
The research required embryos. That was what they railed and voted against. Proponents of the therapy said, if this works, we won't need embryos, but they didn't care. So: No research, no treatment.

@alexproe WE don't, Republicans do. They manage to rile up their voters better than we do sometimes.

PJ_Evans,
@PJ_Evans@mastodon.social avatar

@GottaLaff
Believing that conception is a moment, not a process, is their first mistake. Believing that souls exist before viability (or that all embryos will become fetuses and be born) is another.
I wish they'd admit they're trying to practice medicine with no science or medical background.

GottaLaff,
@GottaLaff@mastodon.social avatar

@PJ_Evans And being an atheist, I have a real problem with all of their positions.

jetton,
@jetton@mastodon.online avatar

@GottaLaff @PJ_Evans

But they're Christians, so they have to hew to the 1800 year long tradition that life begins at…
[checks notes]… quickening.

Somewhere between 16 to 20 weeks.

The idea being that this was the moment the soul enters the fetus, so the fetus goes WTF and kicks out.
It was only in mid 19th century this whole life at conception crap started.

Narcissistic borderline personality disorder:
Selfishness

Arrogance
Aggression
Manipulative conduct
DARVO abusive habits
Lack of empathy
Superficial
Lack of reciprocity
Unable to share
Lack of accountability

It's endless

@Npars01 @GottaLaff @elmiller0330 Yep. Indeed, I think for many fascists apparent hypocrisy is a feature, not a bug — it indicates one has the power to make rules but not be bound by them.

This is also why progressive focus on catching conservatives out in hypocrisy is not that effective. It may bother those on the fence, but it’s not going to convince True Believers that their leaders are playing them false — it just makes them seem more powerful.

elmiller0330,
@elmiller0330@disabled.social avatar

@michaelgemar @Npars01 @GottaLaff Makes sense. Wilhoit's Law in action. "Conservatism consists of exactly one proposition, to wit: There must be in-groups whom the law protects but does not bind, alongside out-groups whom the law binds but does not protect."

    @GottaLaff

    Steve Scalise is so misunderstood. When he voted against stem cell therapy it was to save it from being wasted on the great unwashed. His disagreement is that the treatment should only be used on superior human beings and he, Scalise, is a superior being. He would have campaigned and voted for the therapy if it was restricted to his kind, people of worth.

    An aside: Why do people add that they hope he recovers? Why? This sorry excuse for a human? They could have just left it out. Was it really necessary? I see that a lot regarding people who would be happy to "reduce the surplus population".

    GottaLaff,
