If anybody is wondering, yes, it is real and no it isn't phishing. And yes, they sent it from an Apple customer email address, fraudprevention@icloud.com.

They claim to be representing Felix Juhl of Artefaktum LLC, a cybersecurity company.

The original toots had zero boosts, zero favorites and zero replies before they sent the email — and for some reason wasn’t indexed on Google.

Interestingly, after almost 24 hours exactly none of the Mastodon discussion has been indexed by Google.

@GossiTheDog We do not have sitemaps, and I do not think that they crawl the various RSS feeds we publish (there are a lot of them!). A Google team reached out to us to see how we could improve our indexing so more “real-time" posts are surfaced on search, so there may be some improvements in the coming months if we figure out how to do it properly.

@GossiTheDog @renchap I am pretty sure that happens via a bespoke integration; I’m sure that agreements remain for that kind of access even if the API is out of reach for the majority of devs now.

@GossiTheDog So if I'm reading this correctly, this Felix Juhl person may or may not be a current or former German spy, but this cybersecurity company Artifaktum LLC that he definitely founded is definitely threatening to sue to get a year old thread claiming that he may be a current or former German spy, with receipts, deleted?

@GossiTheDog The fact that the legal suffix is L. LM. instead of LL. M. (a mistake a lawyer would most certainly not make) definitely adds to the questionability of this. There's an Ian Watt who is registered in Pennsylvania and Ohio but not Massachusetts, and it's very doubtful said Ian Watt signed off on this at all.

I think they thought they had a mark, a pigeon, a stooge due to sloppy Google searching.

They must have Googled "Kevin Beaumont" and "Lawsuit" and did a sloppy job at following through on their research, stopping at only the first result > https://www.geekwire.com/2023/security-firm-sues-microsoft-alleging-tech-giant-misused-trove-of-stolen-logins-and-passwords/.

They missed it was finally dismissed WITH prejudice after a dismissal without prejudice for a do-over amended complaint.

It was shot out of court couple times.
