@Teri_Kanefield As long as you’re here I don’t care where else you are. Why limit yourself? If you have the energy, do it. I think the more people you can connect with (especially with your expertise) the better. I don’t have the energy. 20 yrs ago, maybe. Now? Not so much. More power to ya.
@Teri_Kanefield yeah the view they shouldn’t be federated or blocked wholesale is extremely shortsighted. I love the idea people on threads can follow us and we can talk about our ad free utopia with chronological timelines. Get more people over here to mastodon! 👍
@Teri_Kanefield Yeah, there are some things I'll never mention on the net. I won't even type them into my net surfing computer. This is in addition to all the stuff I did that are covered by ITAR and the Espionage Act. Many people are invested very strongly in identifying with some idol or idea. Anything that contradicts their beliefs is exploded out of all proportion to its importance.
Grok all the hues, shades, tints, tones, and intensities of everything. Shades of gray aren't enough.
@Teri_Kanefield Some of us who don't have strong feelings about the fediverse, ActivityPub, or the open source "cause," still can't look at #Threads without seeing Facebook and its many, many sins.
@Teri_Kanefield One thing I've seen mentioned, but not discussed in depth, and not by anyone well-versed in EU privacy regulations, is how Threads federation will work vis-a-vis instances hosted in Europe
I know that the mod of the instance that I'm on is in Europe, and has stated that if Threads isn't going to comply w/ EU data privacy regs, he's not going to federate w/ them
I wonder if you or others have seen any subject matter experts weigh in on this?
@Teri_Kanefield Well, I don't know that that's the consensus of EU mods, or even an accurate read of what EU regs require - basically, what I know of the rules in that jurisdiction is that anyone who makes confident-sounding claims about what they allow or don't is probably just blowing smoke
@RufusJCooter
Actually the law is pretty clear. And Threads in its current form is in breach of GDPR (probably the reason it is not available in the EU). (EU citizen here btw). @Teri_Kanefield
@Teri_Kanefield I don't know that I'd go that far! I plan to continue to offering the same advice I've been offering all along - if you're planning on signing up on a particular instance, do like 15 minutes of due diligence; look at who they've blocked, look at their home feed, look at the conversations people are having, look at where they're located.
I am thrilled that, from here, I’ll be able to interact with my community members (activists and organizers) who are going to Threads.
Same thought process. The community I come from is such that Meta products are almost their bread and butter and they don’t care about privacy or the things Meta does. You could add people from SE Asia and the Philippines to the mix. At least, I’ll be able to connect with them from here and won’t need to visit Threads.
Add to that, the issues that concern them are different altogether.
@Teri_Kanefield Oh no.. what did people do.. I think your opinions are really interesting whatever the domain, please keep posting about anything you want!
@Teri_Kanefield That's ridiculous. If people don't like what you are saying, they can block you. There are people on here whose sole purpose seems to be telling others what to do.
@Teri_Kanefield Probably true. It occurs to me that there is something ironic about tribal reactions from federation proponents. Like opening a public pool and then getting upset when the Smiths decide to get in the water. On the other hand, how human.
