I have used YouTube, Reddit and Mastodon for news related to certain topics. Now I want to be more independent in finding my own news sources. However, there are so many sources on the internet I wouldn’t know where to begin to find them by myself.
Gen. Abdourahmane Tchiani on Friday named himself leader of Niger's so-called National Council for the Safeguard of the Homeland, two days after his troops detained the democratically elected Pres. Mohamed Bazoum in the presidential palace in Niamey. Al Jazeera (LR: 2 CP: 1)...
Just finished Traffic by former BuzzFeed News Editor in Chief Ben Smith where he discusses the rise and plateau of the social media age told through the lens of the events that led up to his effort to infuse traditional journalism with a native digital media model and the aftermath of his failure to do so.
According to Ben, there won't be another Twitter or Facebook because the social media age driven by hyper-toxic virality has peaked. "Traffic" is an accounting of digital media history through 2020, drawing lines from dick pics, Obama's election, "The Dress", through to Trump.
I find the book accurate & an easy read, but a too gossipy retelling of how humans competing for traffic led us from hopes & dreams to trolls & conspiracies.
The messages contained are relevant, but it could have been a blog post.
@CharlesWRobinson_2023 yeah, just read the first 2/3rds of that interview transcript if you're looking for some insight into how we got here and where we might be going as far as social media goes. Read up to the point when he starts talking about his new project, Semafor.
I lived many of the events in the book closely so it helped jog my memory about things, but I didn't need to hit the rewind button for 300 pages.
House Republicans left town for their long August recess on Thursday after passing one government funding bill and abruptly bailing on another, as tensions flared within the GOP conference over spending cuts and abortion.
Semafor reports: "Congress is gone for six weeks with less progress than they hoped for on must-pass bills ahead of a potential government shutdown in the fall."
ANKENY, Iowa (AP) — Donald Trump and rival Ron DeSantis will appear for the first time at the same campaign event in early voting Iowa on Friday at a pivotal moment for the Republican presidential candidates....
OpenAI's Sam Altman is launching a new cryptocurrency called Worldcoin today, according to Semafor. People around the world, except the U.S., can receive a free token in exchange for an eye scan, which is said to provide each person with a unique online ID.
"But in fact, two people familiar with the incident said, the Paramount-owned cable channel ditched the DeSantis episode over fears of the political consequences. One person briefed on the decision told Semafor that the company’s Washington lobbyist, DeDe Lea, raised concerns about the piece."
How Paramount buried a Vice documentary on Ron DeSantis at Guantanamo Bay
@StillIRise1963 The best line in the article: "'We not only stand behind our rigorous reporting but are proud of the incredible journalism showcased in this story,' a spokesperson for Vice, Elise Flick, told Semafor."
They just don't stand proudly behind that incredible journalism enough to let it see the light of day. #DeSantisIsAFacist and #CorporationsWontSaveUs.
Jollof rice is a staple dish on every West African table. Every country makes theirs differently but the most famous varieties are probably Nigerian, Ghanaian and Senegalese. Chef Tolu Eros talked to Semafor about the "jollof wars," a friendly feud over which nation makes the best rice, and how his "unity jollof" might settle the conflict.
There’s just something fucking hilarious about laying off employees, mocking them, and being sued for improperly firing them – and then whining that your competitor hired them and that they have access to Twitter information still....
The cream on top of this cherry is that Meta claim that they don’t have any ex-twitter employees.
“Andy Stone, Meta’s communications director, told Semafor that Twitter’s accusations are baseless. “No one on the Threads engineering team is a former Twitter employee — that’s just not a thing,” he said.”
"Spiro, in his letter, accused Meta of hiring former Twitter employees who "had and continue to have access to Twitter's trade secrets and other highly confidential information," News website Semafor first reported."
Twitter is threatening to sue Meta over concerns about its new Threads app, according to a letter obtained by Semafor. Twitter is considering legal action against Meta over its fast-growing rival app Threads. Threads, which was launched to millions on Wednesday, is similar to Twitter and has been pitched by Meta bosses as a “friendly” alternative....
Twitter is threatening to sue Meta over its Threads platform. In a letter obtained by Semafor, Twitter lawyer Alex Spiro accused the company of engaging in "systematic, willful, and unlawful misappropriation of Twitter’s trade secrets and other intellectual property" and said that Meta had hired dozens of former Twitter employees who had access to confidential information. Meta's communications director says the accusations are baseless.
The letter from Twitter's lawyer to Meta over Threads is comically bad. There's no substance, just a vague claim that Twitter employees Elon fired had some sort of dark magic in their brains about how to make a microblogging service.
@maxkennerly Rebuttal: in 5 words "That's just not a thing"
"A Meta source told Semafor that Twitter’s accusations are baseless.
“No one on the Threads engineering team is a former Twitter employee — that’s just not a thing,” the source said."
Twitter has threatened to sue Meta Platforms over its new Threads platform, Semafor reported on Thursday, citing a letter sent to the Facebook parent's CEO Mark Zuckerberg by Twitter's lawyer Alex Spiro.
Members of Ron DeSantis' presidential campaign team spitballed ideas for meme videos in an now-defunct internal group chat before offloading them on anonymous/friendly Twitter accounts for dissemination, according to texts obtained by Semafor.
The laundering operation, which took place in a now-defunct internal group chat called "War Room Creative Ideas," involved at least 2 highly controversial videos—one featuring anti-LGBTQ+ content & another including Nazi imagery.
