Hmmm... is the UK's political system, that has for so long offered an advantage to the Tories about to cause them major damage?

Certainly, fragmenting parties are not served well by FPTP & if such a fragmentation is underway on the right, we may soon see an expanded interest in proportional representation & voting reform coming from the rump Tories & their political competitors;

how will that be received by mainstream PR enthusiasts?

@ChrisMayLA6 This is the positive side effect of the rise of UKIP (or whatever it's called now). The left has always been split but the right's unity has kept them winning. There is now clear separation between centre and far right.

Assuming Labour sweeps in at the GE, they could even introduce PR during their first term. That would reprogramme and modernise the entire UK electoral system for the better.

In 30 years, my vote has never counted, so I'd love to see PR, though I'm not optimistic.

technige,
@technige@fosstodon.org avatar

@ChrisMayLA6 I entirely agree. My thoughts come from what I'd like to see happen, rather than what I think will happen. But it really feels like they have a great opportunity to out-manoeuvre the Tories long-term while they are at a very low point.

It's likely the decision-making process is more tactical (and perhaps populist) for that though. It would require long-term strategic thinking, which seems uncommon.

Everyone is having opinions about and its creator. Working on a FOSS project in your free time can be a lot of fun but is also a thankless task. Even more so if you are doing it alone.

If you use open source software, also consider helping out with the projects. Don't be entitled. No-one owes you their time and effort.

I find it truly baffling how, despite the inherent security and unwavering stability of / systems, coupled with the abundance of / alternatives available for commonly used applications, there is still a prevalent tendency among individuals to persist in the use of the operating system...

technige,
@technige@fosstodon.org avatar

@blake @theophilus79 That was a distinct problem 10-15 years ago, but is considerably better these days. Many people use Linux on a daily basis, not least because a lot of apps, like office suites, have online versions.

technige,

@treyhunner The difference between tuples and lists. The use cases are clear in my head, but you need a minimal amount of programming context before they stop looking like interchangeable structures.

Code linters are unnecessary pedants that hamper workflow. This effect is more pronounced the fewer contributors work on a code base.

"Spiro, in his letter, accused Meta of hiring former Twitter employees who "had and continue to have access to Twitter's trade secrets and other highly confidential information," News website Semafor first reported."

Pointless, impotent yelling from Musk. Technologically, Twitter isn't special. There might be a bit of clever in its scalability, but that's far from unique. The value is in the network of people. Or at least it used to be.
