COP29 is homeless. It is supposed to be held in Eastern Europe, but under UN rules, the countries in the area have the right to veto, so #Putin has been vetoing every single one of them. In the event of stalemate, #COP29 will be held in Bonn (the UNFCCC seat) under the incumbent president: Sultan #AlJaber. https://mastodon.online/@vanderbeeken/111528463447854845
All over the world Climate turned the corner this year. In Canada we had our worst wildfire season EVER before summer even hit. In 2023 the COP global climate conference has never been more important yet more compromised. Your daily #COP28 coverage begins here
US Climate envoy/former presidential candidate #JohnKerry called #AlJaber a "terrific choice," said "as an oil exec, he understands & accepts the need to transition away from oil." Might as well left a hungry child in charge of the Cheetos. Cheese dust all over his fingers
Not angry or even remotely surprised COP28 President/BigOil CEO/Sultan #AlJaber is spouting old Climate Denialist tropes today. Expected nothing less. I blame the #UnitedNations team that made it possible & of course #JohnKerry for selling it to you in the first place.
COP28 is officially a shambles and never forget: every #AlJaber story is a #JohnKerry story & an outright betrayal of every climate activist on the planet. Go home, Kerry. Never again darken a COP conference. We deserve WAY better than you B.S. billionaires and your dirty deals.
#ClimateDiary There is no question that #COP28 will be the most important yet. The #GlobalStocktake will be the “biggest accountability moment in history”, and on its basis leaders will need to make crucial key decisions about fiscal and policy commitments. With less than two months to go, we need to all be as well informed as possible and put pressure on leaders as much as we can. I thought I would start a 🧵that I will keep going in the run up 1/n
5/n Anyway, am starting today with this profile of the president of #COP28, Sultan #AlJaber, by Fiona Harvey, brilliant and insightful as ever. And yes, he is what he is. CEO of the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (Adnoc). It’s deeply dismaying, but better to know and understand what we have
@pvonhellermannn I heard #AlJaber interviewed about #COP28 on a podcast, and he’s really quite charming and reasonable-sounding. The pro-UAE argument seems to be, “they’re not Saudi Arabia, you know.” Inarguably true but I don’t know what that’s supposed to mean.
