I see many posts of companies and their representatives stating that they work for a "greener and more sustainable future".

Are they insane or blunt ignorant and really think the present is already "green" and "sustainable" and they'll just make the future a bit more green and sustainable?

Words matter…

“• Americans have strong positive feelings for the term “natural gas”.

• Americans have negative views of the alternative terms “methane” and “methane gas”.

• They associate natural gas with “clean” and methane gas with “pollution”.

• The alternative terms “fossil gas” and “fracked gas” are politically polarized.”

Not going to lie, I'm skeptical. Very skeptical. But there is a chance CO2 emissions will have peaked in 2023.

"We find there is a 70% chance that emissions start falling in 2024 if current clean technology growth trends continue and some progress is made to cut non-CO2 emissions."

Regardless of if it actually happens, it is important to recognize the progress we are making, which are more rapid than most realize and many predicted. There is hope.

@FantasticalEconomics (unfortunately) I strongly doubt it.

Have you read the UN Production Gap Report?

I agree we should acknowledge we’re making some progress. But more important, in my view, it’s that we accept failure, for example the utter failure to meet 1.5C. And then talk openly (officially) about the consequences of this failure and of failing more and more. Only then it will be clear to us that we’re not doing enough.

  • Climate change endangers human civilisation
  • CO2 is already too high to meet 1.5C
  • We need to immediately and radically change course

If anyone tells you fairytales about “keeping 1.5 in reach” or “keeping 1.5C alive” refer them to the Production Gap Report and this graph in particular, and if you want show them the latest statements of fossil psychopaths like the Saudi energy minister or Exxon’s CEO, all hooked up and ready to go for all the hydrocarbon molecules.

Big personal news: after 25 years at CNET, I’ve joined Commonwealth Fusion Systems, a startup developing zero-carbon power plants to help fight climate change. As head of content, I'll work to make knowledge of fusion mainstream as the technology proves itself worthy. Questions? Hit me up! @stshank Framing fusion as an alternative to „fight climate change“ is misleading at best. Climate action, especially with regards to power generation, is needed NOW with real measures and not with solutions which nobody knows if and in how many decades to which price and under whose control may come.

If Germans would put the same amount of time, money and energy into restoring wildlife and biodiversity in their gardens, yards, lawns, etc. as they put every year into eliminating all life (especially moss and weeds) from their house entryways and home parking… some use tools, some use chemicals, some pressurised water jets and some will even use flames to remove all life from these areas!

Even more concerning is his statement that there’s „still time for 1.5C“, which is honey for BAU-loving decision makers, and simplistic reduction of our situation to a purely political almost binary problem. I respect his work and fight but this way of argumentation is something I can’t relate to.

It is not a comment practice in the USA and I have never heard of this until a user talked about it.

It is a movement that we fully understand, and even in the area that I live in it will be a hard thing to implement, we think that it is ok not to mow the lawn for May.

Although here we are trying to put on year-round strategies by creating specific gardens and spaces for the pollinators.

Spraying compost into those areas and your lawn will make the topsoil more resilient and help the biodiversity and biology to develop.
