'Tis the season for maple syrup making. For any who are curious about the history and process, I made a slideshow video about the process and you can watch it on Vimeo here:

It's just under 6 minutes watch. My voiceover.

Just updated the video on my Streaming HTML article so it’s no longer using Vimeo’s video player (which has tracking) but a simple video tag.

https://ar.al/2024/03/08/streaming-html/

(Sorry it took a little while, it involves a bit more work – but not much more – than simply copying the embed code over.)

PS. Would anyone be interested in a little write-up of how to embed Vimeo videos without their player/tracking but still keeping the closed captions?

Very impressed with how far Vimeo has come with its auto-captioning and transcript features.

Captions are generated when you upload a video (and it does a great job with it) and you can edit them as you like. You can also edit using the transcript with the ability to have it automatically remove umms, aahs, and silences (or do so manually, if you like).

And you not only get captions but you can also view the whole transcript in the player. Very convenient.

Torniamo a Seal

I believe Vimeo will end up catering towards high end corporations & slowly retreat from the consumer space. Presuming they do not go bankrupt in 2024.

A spherical shell-like structure 1 billion light-years in diameter named Ho’oleilana is discovered in the distribution of relatively nearby galaxies. We posit this is the 1st observation of an individual Baryon Acoustic Oscillation (BAO).

People are so mad at me for promoting my YouTube, but if there’s one thing I’ve learned it’s that you have to diversify when it comes to platforms.

Also, I’m really proud of the videos I’ve been putting out there and have a lot of big plans for my channel! Sorry for telling u guys about it constantly, but it’s a big focus for me and I have been working hard on my videos!! https://youtube.com/@TaylorLorenz

@taylorlorenz It’s fine. I am on as well. I have not yet uploaded too many videos on the platform, but I am going to migrate my videos to YouTube (Vimeo is becoming too expensive).

I did look at but I concluded I could not afford the bandwidth & hosting fees.

This response from @owncast is befuddling.

Not once did I say that running Owncast is expensive. The server software itself isn’t costly to run, and doesn’t require much in the way of hardware specs.

I said that video is expensive. Which it typically is, especially compared to text, photos, audio, etc.

Now if @owncast knows of ways to save on the cost of video, I’m sure everyone would like to learn how. Because it’s not just me who’s concerned about the cost of video. It’s a whole lot of people who would be running an Owncast server but haven’t yet.

So tell me how to do it. If I’m streaming all my video games, I’d rather use than .

@atomicpoet @owncast Hmmm…I wonder if the folks at @matrix could provide live streaming hosting video tips for ‽ Maybe the team too.

Live-streaming can be expensive & easily skyrocket the cost of hosting (depending on the video quality). I currently rely on & as I can afford those, but high quality live streaming is sadly beyond my budget.

"I don't think Pixelfed needs to exist, use Mastodon"

Pixelfed provides a photo/video focused experience, and offers more features geared towards this (filters, collections, portfolios) than Mastodon does

You can use Mastodon or other platforms to share photos

When content is based around photos/videos, it's a much different experience

@dansup 😅 Yeah, also limits me to sharing 4 photos at a time. On my instance I can share up to 10 photos (I can extend the amount but that would be overkill.

Maybe I'm doing something wrong but I don't get why Vimeo is the standard for where people upload short films and indie projects. The quality has been pretty horrid for me. Videos are usually pixelated and take ages for the HD version to load.
