"Captain, our sensors have picked up signs of life! 15,000 life signs have materialized behind the garden shed!"

ai6yr,

Hot dog.

Today's home repair task: squeaky wheel gets the grease. Applied high temperature white lithium grease to a squeaky dryer drum roller. Here's the FLIR showing the temperature of the wheel in question around 115F to 119F. Lithium grease specified to 325F and ignition point is above 500F. (Did not want to set the dryer on fire!)

Hmm, pretty sure I am going to have to cut a hole in the ceiling of my garage to go insulate a wall. And will have to spray foam a small section missing insulation in my kitchen. Crappy contractors. (these I can easily fix, it's just a PITA)

New window up top, old sliding glass door below, for thermal comparison. Top window is vinyl and has a U-Factor of 0.26; Not sure on the lower, which is aluminum but double paned.

Everyday is (had to try out the FLIR for cat detection).

Before/after OCD insulating spree with FLIR and expanding foam. First image shows a massive thermal hole (between the fish) against a hot South facing wall. Second image is the same hole filled with expanding foam (cooler than the rest of the wall). Very expensive vs. Fiberglass batts, but this room typically overheats badly in summer.

Same wall a week later after insulating with foam, purple surrounded by orange and yellow, indicating it is much cooler than surrounding wall. You can tell it is the same wall by the fish painted on it.

Hmm, I think I need more foam. Or better expanding foam. Or the foam doesn't like expanding in cavities.

ai6yr,

I can see through walls!

It's a mystery to me why this one tiny section of wall has NO INSULATION. Will fix this with a drill and a can of expanding foam, but... why?!?!

Beehive FLIR. The bright yellow area is warmer--where the hive is clustered. If you put your ear or a stethoscope up to the side of the hive, you can hear the colony gently beating their wings to generate heat.

ai6yr,

Same beehive with slightly different tones. Will be interesting to see what size this hive actually is. I am going to say 3-4 frames, in the bottom hive.

Does a watched pot boil (on induction cooktop?)

ai6yr,

Ooh, steam detection via FLIR!

Hmm, I'm going to be walking around looking for air leaks for weeks and weeks, LOL. Now that I know what to look for. (training from the DOE available on how to detect air leaks... cool photo showing what leaks look like).

FLIR before/after -- same wall, on the left before I reinsulated the wall, you can see the cold temperature (triangular, red/orange). The second image is after today's insulation work and cutting a giant hole and climbing up into the space above my front patio (about $20 worth of insulation) -- dramatic difference in thermal performance. Over time, it will be worth a LOT MORE than $20 in energy usage.

ai6yr, to Plumbing

Aha, FLIR says the drywallers likely hit a pipe behind this wall. Reading cold on this stud. On the other side of the wall is a shower stall and supply.

Noticed this at the temporary housing the other day. Daylight through a door... leaking heat out, cold in. Easy fix to this. Really helpful during something like this Polar Vortex to minimize heat loss.

ai6yr,

Btw, if you haven't used a Kill-A-Watt Meter, these things are AWESOME. HEY--> JUST NOTICED THIS 00> THERE IS A FLIR IN THERE YOU CAN BORROW!!!!!

ai6yr, to Energy

Sigh. This is going to bug me until I fix it. Cold section of a wall in my house (undergoing repair), an opening into an (empty) unconditioned space. The insulation in there was removed due to a plumbing disaster, but because there's nothing else on the other side, the insulation there either was not installed or was already knocked loose when the new drywall went up. I'm just going to cut myself some access panels later, crawl in, and add my own insulation $10 of insulation.

ai6yr,

Well, one problem fixed!! See the FLIR difference between the last wall and this wall. (red = cold in the last wall... you'll note this same wall now you can't see any difference in temperature).

ai6yr, to Energy

Renting a relative's house while my house is pieced together due to a plumbing disaster, and pulled out my FLIR this morning--around 40F (4.4C) outside--and this building's thermal envelope is dismal. That said, I will likely end up fixing what I can here at some point, assuming they plan to keep this house.

ai6yr,

Insulation on this wall is not up to snuff, IMHO. Not an easy fix on that one, however.

ai6yr,

Here's the ceiling of that same room. There is a great big purple mark, where there apparently is no insulation installed.
