"Good Friday" - exactly whose perspective is reflected in the naming of this day anyway?
Perhaps it was named by the Roman soldiers under Pilate?
Soldier's diary entry: "What a good day. Slept well, up at nine-thirty gone ten, full English, tried out the new shield, did a little crucifixion, took a long lunch. All in all a Good Friday. Now if that stone we put in front of that tomb would just stay put, next week will be off to a good start."
As the Easter Triduum continues, here's the very touching Virgin and Saint John Mourning over the Body of Christ, fragment of a Lamentation of Christ, Master of Delft, c. 1500 - c. 1510. (Rijksmuseum)
I am a dedicated public servant happily not at the salt mine. I broke another milestone in weight loss. And just now activated a brand-new #POTA park (US-11248 Goodwin State Forest) that's about 5 miles uses from my house. (I've been wanting that one listed in #POTA for years). Only the fourth activation ever for that particular park.
Was anyone else listening live to the St John Passion on its 300th anniversary. Bach often moves me to tears but the St John is an especially emotional narrative, with deep reflection in the arias and chorales. To me a tighter and more powerful work than the St Matthew. #Bach#GoodFriday#Karfreitag#JohannesPassion#StJohnPassion
“Christmas and Easter can be subjects for poetry, but Good Friday, like Auschwitz, cannot. The reality is so horrible it is not surprising that people should have found it a stumbling block to faith.”

"The oldest-surviving #Christian hymns designed exclusively for #HolyWeek are a set known as the Idiomele. In the modern Orthodox Church, they are sung during the Royal Hours service of #GoodFriday morning (the final hymn is sung during two additional services). Apart from their antiquity, the most noteworthy feature of these hymns is that they were the first to blame “the #Jews” for the death of #Christ."

Three people have wished me a "Happy Good Friday" this morning. I may have been out of the RC game for awhile, but I still find that very weird.
As I sit here drinking my morning #EarlGrey (and looking forward to #chai later as it is #FridayChaiDay ) I remember back as a young kid in Sunday School at church asking the class teacher what was good about #GoodFriday, mainly because the whole crucifixion process seemed pretty much the opposite of "good". Naturally I got in trouble for being disruptive (again) as I was insistent on an answer and didn't get a snack.
