Let me tell you about a juicy !

Feb 2014: A containing words from poet is discovered - supposedly.

The papyrologist who found it makes contradicting statements.

It was found in the binding of a - did he destroy an for another?

Oh actually, it was a book binding!

Huh?

The is soon found to have illegally sold another ancient text.

He has been suspended. The 'new Sappho' is dead.

Let me tell you about a people from !

The Bugis are Muslim, but their belief is strongly influenced by their ancestral .

One centres around the Monitor lizard. The animal is believed to have a human & to be the twin of children. They are treated with respect.

Bugis also categorize people into 5 genders. Each is needed to keep the universe in balance.

Bissu, the which is neither man nor woman, is the intermediary between humans & .

About the photo:

The building style of the Bugis reflects their belief system.

The gods live below & above, so the first floor represents those below (simple & earthen, but also the foundation) and the second floor represents the sky gods (mighty and beautiful, but also far away).

Both gods made humans to settle the formerly empty middle.

Did you know that Jean-Paul #Satre, the literary #philosopher, may have asked for #prize money after he declined the #NobelPrize?

In 1964, Satre won the Nobel Prize for #Literature for his (depressing) catalogue of novels.
He declined.

His rejection caused a scandal (to Satre's chagrin), & the prize remained unawarded.

In 1975, the #Swedish #Academy received a letter asking if the prize #money would still be available.

It isn't known if Satre or someone close to him sent it.

Male-defaultism in #archaeology is bloody annoying.

Just because someone draws a #hunting scene in a #cave, doesn't mean it was a man doing so or depicting one.

Every #archer grave from the Bell Beaker Era MUST be #male because even when they find #female additions, that just means she is related to a great man or the male lost status (of course).

Archaeologist Randy Haas just assumed he found a male big game hunter in Peru in 2013. Except he didn't.

Getting real #bored.

#rant over.

Did you know that #Shinzo Abe's grandfather was known as a #monster?

This is a 19-point #thread on the tumultuous years during & after #WW2 from Japan's POV, on the #problem of #US peace-keeping efforts & on Japan's ongoing nepotism issues.

7/ When Japan lost the war in '45, Kishi was imprisoned as a Class A war . US Ambassador to Japan Joseph Grew, however, liked Kishi so much that he helped in his release without a trial.

8/ In 1952, Kishi tried getting elected with a motto of rearming Japan - it did not go well. He flirted with joining the Party, but they had no interest in him.

mythologyandhistory,
@mythologyandhistory@mas.to avatar

9/ Eventually, he settled on the #Liberals. His aim was to become #party leader, but he knew the best way would be to lure Liberal members away to form his own party. And that's exactly what he did.

10/ In '54, he had formed his Party. He elected himself , not the leader - so that he could control the . His leader won the .

11/ Kishi now had his own party & his enemy (the Liberal leader) had stepped down - so he arranged a party merger. The Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) would be headed by Kishi 65 days after its founding after the elected head fell ill.

mythologyandhistory,
@mythologyandhistory@mas.to avatar

12/ As of Japan, Kishi wanted 2 things: an armed Japan & a severance of US-Japan alliances. He had some support for this, as people were sick of US military bases. The between the nations was highly unequal, allowing the US overly much freedom.

13/ Kishi proposed a revision of the treaty in favour of Japan. In his usual style however, he planned to supress any detractors by force.
When he tried to extend his term as PM, assuming people would appreciate his treaty reversal, he learned something new:

mythologyandhistory,
@mythologyandhistory@mas.to avatar

14/ The people wanted NO treaty, not a revised one! They weren't thankful to Kishi, but outraged that he forced a ratification of something they saw as making war in Japan possible once again. People decided to take action.

15/ When White House Secretary Hagerty arrived in Japan to prepare for Eisenhower's visit regarding the treaty, he had to be rescued from a rioting crowd. Soon, a protesting student died & the demonstrations escalated.

mythologyandhistory,
@mythologyandhistory@mas.to avatar

16/ This led to the demonstration in Japanese history. Kishi meanwhile, was pressured to resign. He considered using the to tame the crowds, but eventually gave up.

mythologyandhistory,
@mythologyandhistory@mas.to avatar

17/ He stayed in the Diet until 1979, never tiring of his cause to revoke the treaty. He was still angry about his failure when he died in '87 at age 90.

19/ As of 2024, the revised treaty is still intact, with currently some 80,100 personnel, spread out over 120 bases, stationed in Japan.
