Keeping #dolphins, #orcas and other cetaceans in #captivity is cruel. Depriving them of the vast open spaces and social bonds that they would normally have in the wild, and confining them to small, concrete #tanks to perform tricks for dead fish is highly unethical for these complex marine mammals. No matter how sophisticated the enclosure, no man made facility can ever hope to replicate the wild world of dolphins and whales.

Blasting underwater tunes to try and keep killer whales away is a bad idea for multiple reasons, a researcher says.
Actual economist in NBER paper: “We find consistent evidence that vessel noise pollution from international shipping has lowered fertility and raised the mortality of the SRKW [Orcas] significantly. Had noise pollution remained at its pre-1998 levels, the SRKW population would be 30% larger. Noise pollution is a growing threat to marine mammals worldwide.” https://www.nber.org/papers/w31390
There have been many documented social trends amongst orcas, but we're here to discuss the greatest one: salmon hats.
Back in 1987, one orca from a group known as the Southern Residents began swimming with a dead salmon on its head. The female orca was part of the K pod in the Pacific Northwest's Puget Sound.
Within weeks, individuals within ALL THREE pods in the area were observed sporting veils of dead salmon. The behavior didn't seem to serve much of a function other than the whales apparently found it very entertaining.
Then, just as suddenly as it began, the salmon hats went out of fashion. The behavior had ceased the following summer.
With #capybaras covering land operations, and #orcas providing sea power, all non-human species need now is for the #crows to organize and start fighting, and this Mass Extinction event everybody's talking about might turn out not quite what we had expected.
So, my largest carpenter ant colony wants me to mail this letter "to the orcas" and "don't read it" -- uh... I want to respect their privacy but... IDK about this one. #ants#orcas#uhoh#antvideos
Sperm whales off the southern coast of Western Australia devised a clever, if smelly and gross, strategy to protect themselves from what could have been a fatal attack by 30 killer whales. Scientists were there to witness it, and Live Science tells us more: https://flip.it/U2Oq1_ #Science#MarineLife#Whales#Orcas#Animals
I finally made the trek to meet Bruunidun. She’s a #ThomasDambo giant #troll making her home next to Puget Sound in Lincoln Park in West Seattle. Idun is playing a troll sized flute to call home native #Orcas.
