ORCAS AND DOLPHINS DO NOT BELONG IN CAPTIVITY!

Keeping #dolphins, #orcas and other cetaceans in #captivity is cruel. Depriving them of the vast open spaces and social bonds that they would normally have in the wild, and confining them to small, concrete #tanks to perform tricks for dead fish is highly unethical for these complex marine mammals. No matter how sophisticated the enclosure, no man made facility can ever hope to replicate the wild world of dolphins and whales.

The vastness and of the open , in which dolphins and other have developed over more than 50 million years, cannot be duplicated in a tank or an enclosure in the sea. Consequently, the complexity of dolphins’ behavioral repertoire cannot be accommodated in . Based on today’s knowledge of cetaceans’ sophisticated physiology and highly developed emotional sense,

Dolphin-Assisted Therapy is bad for dolphins and bad for . It is a that brings in huge amounts of money; it is bad for dolphins that are confined to separated from their and their loved ones, and it is bad for patients and their families who are getting soaked in more ways than one.

END ALL IMPORTS & EXPORTS OF DOLPHINS ACROSS U.S. BORDERS

Captive and are transported across the world to and . These animals are ripped away from their families and all they know, forced to live in barren concrete . Transportation is a stressful process for these animals. The journey itself poses significant risks. Stress-induced illnesses and health problems are an issue and in the worst cases it can lead to death. When transported,

sometimes for hours, dolphins and whales are forced to lay immobile in small transportation containers without natural light and air.

Wild dolphins live in highly complex structures and travel many miles a day. They use a complicated system of clicks and whistles to communicate with one another and echolocation to navigate and hunt. confines these self-aware animals to small, sterile tanks. With little to no stimulation and insufficient space to roam,

DOLPHINS SUFFER AT MARINE PARKS

Imagine living your entire life in your living room, the vast world outside becoming an alien concept. For in , this analogy becomes a harsh reality. Confined within the limited dimensions of an artificial enclosure, these sentient creatures endure a daily assault of bright lights and booming noises, while their instinctive urge to explore and socialize is constantly thwarted.

WHY IS CAPTIVITY A CURSE FOR DOLPHINS?

are built for the boundless , where they travel huge distances, socialise with their , hunt for food, and navigate through challenges.

But in , their world shrinks drastically. They’re confined in limited spaces, surrounded by artificial environments, and subjected to continuous human interaction and unnatural behaviours, all for humans’ amusement.

THE TAIJI DOLPHIN HUNTS BEGIN

It is with a heavy heart that I write to you on the first red cove day of 2023, a day that witnessed the ruthless and of ~10 innocent Risso's in . The dolphins fought hard to escape but after a 2 hour chase, the entire was forced into the cove and brutally killed.

Our team is not just standing by. At the end of August we submitted an appeal

HALT THE HARMFUL DOLPHIN HUNTS IN TAIJI

We are fighting to end the drives for good. Every year, fishermen herd hundreds of dolphins into a narrow cove in , . Terrified, these dolphins are captured or killed. We’re targeting the two economic drivers – the sale of dolphins into , and the of dolphins for food.

I quite enjoy the animal picture accounts, hourly foxes, capybaras, etc.

Recently I've become aware of how many of those pictures are of animals in captivity or inappropriately in people's houses. And puzzling over the difference between a domesticated dog and a capybara in someone's house. Perhaps capys want to be domesticated just as ancient canines chose. And perhaps they should just be allowed to stay wild.

The changing role of zoos from animal penitentiaries to places saving species also plays into this.

But, people using cuteness to sell captured wildlife is just wrong. And I'm increasingly uncomfortable with giving my attention to cuteness that results in captivity.

And then there are platforms carefully avoiding awareness of what they enable...
