According to an "information" panel I read near Balloch Castle in Scotland this week, "whin is another word for gorse".
In fact, gentle reader, it's the Scots noun for gorse, not an alternative English one.
This frankly pathetic omission grinds my bloody gears. No more should we accept any attempt to subsume the Scots language or any aspect of our culture into that of Greater England.
I for one would love to set it as my display #languages in #GNOME but it is not among the choices.
Aboot that, #Firefox has #Scots available fur ye tae wale, and is the most awesome leid in the settins ye can stert yaisin richt noo! 👌 Ah dinnae find #Shetlandic though.
Here, as promised, is a translation of the poem in my last post. There are words that have no direct translation and the meaning can be different according to context and inflection. Read the ALT.

Nan Shepherd (1893–1981) was born #OTD, 11 Feb. Recently her nature writing, & her memoir THE LIVING MOUNTAIN, has gained attention—but she was also an important #modernist novelist. Charlotte Peacock weighs her contribution to Scotland’s literary renaissance
Loch A’an, Loch A’an, hoo deep ye lie!
Tell nane yer depth and nane shall I.
Bricht though yer deepmaist pit may be,

Bricht, an’ bricht, an’ bricht as air,

Cauld, cauld is Alnack…
Cauld is the snaw wind and sweet.
The maukin o’ Creagan Alnack
Has snaw for meat.
