New video coming tonight, continuing the history of the Galloway Hydro Scheme.
It will cover the building of Clatteringshaws dam and the Glenlee Tunnel, which was the most expensive and dangerous part of the entire construction.
The last video covered the conditions the workforce endured, during the Great Depression, to construct the scheme, and here's a link to it to catch you up!

Here's my wee latest video, and it's the second in a series about The Galloway Hydro Scheme.
We're moving on downstream from Loch Doon to Kendoon, Carsfad and Earlstoun stations and their lochs.
During the tough times of the early 1930s, there was no shortage of men prepared to risk the hard and hazardous conditions to work on the building of the Hydro Scheme.
The problem for them was keeping their jobs...

Green Party representation in Holyrood relies heavily on list votes from, predominantly, SNP supporters who won't look kindly on them for, as they see it, sabotaging the BHA. This means there's little likelihood of a pro-independence majority at the next election.

Vast majority of constituencies don't have Greens standing in them. I would, and have, give both my votes to the Greens, but give my constituency vote to SNP because Indy.

Long ago, I was a member of the SNP, but the NATO policy introduced by Angus Robertson made me leave. I don't like hawks. I still voted for them, but if they trash their green/progressive credentials, I will find it difficult!

Definitely.
There was a time when you could call them 'tartan tories' but that changed and with that came the electoral success they had waited more than 50 years for. Then, of course, there was a swelling in membership that was very leftist, so they had to go with that flow.
Pretty daft to turn the clock back on that.

This is a phone shot I took of the Rhins of Kells over Loch Doon from the car.

And here is the third instalment of my new wee series about the Galloway Hydro Scheme.

Clatteringshaws Dam is the largest dam on the Galloway Hydro Scheme. It feeds Glenlee Power Station via the Glenlee Tunnel, which was cut through the hard rock of the Galloway landscape in the most dangerous, and expensive, construction of the entire scheme.

All that remains of the once castle-like Glasgow Hydraulic Power Works on High Street in Glasgow. Built in 1895, this was part of Glasgow's hydraulic power system. At its peak, in 1908-1909, it supplied 202,141 gallons of high perssure water through 30 miles of heavy duty 7-inch diameter pipes under the city's streets to power industrial machinery.

Absolutely fascinating!
I'm currently doing some research into the Galloway Hydro Scheme, and some of the most interesting facets is how early the first attempts were planned (1890s) and what was used instead. All of our towns and cities had their own power schemes like this, or steam power, or, of course, coal.

Alternatecelt,
@Alternatecelt@mastodon.scot avatar

@thisismyglasgow
Aye. Ayr had a steam power station that was opened by Lord Kelvin. It was as much a culturally significant marker of progress as it was for industrial progress itself.

I love St Michael's, and not just because of Rabbie's mausoleum. It's a wonderfully gothic and all so tight packed together.
Quite the place to hang out at night when you are a student at the Tech.....

It's been years since I was there at night, but all those tall tombstones looming at you with intent in the dark is worth it. I think Mostly Ghostly does night tours, which I bet are entertaining.
Aye, there must have been some money in Dumfries back in the day.

I really don't think there can be any progress while playing the WM game. The SNP are ignored at best, but we have seen what Labour is prepared to do to stop the SNP getting their rightful 'privileges' , and we don't need to talk about how the tories try to stop the SNP representing Scotland.
Bring them back to Edinburgh, set them up in the old parliament as a Senate, with a main focus of pressuring WM and reaching out internationally for support.
