So, I haven't watched #YouTube for a month, and I don't feel anything was missing. I only listened to two videos while walking.
Now I've finally suspended #RSS updates for most YouTube channels. Doing this for each feed (as Tiny Tiny RSS requires) did put things into perspective...
I've spent so much time in some of these channels. Dozens if not hundreds of hours. And it took some effort to accept letting go, even though effectively, I've already done it.
I did leave two channels alive: one channel that served as a source for ~95% of YouTube links in my zettelkasten, and #systemcrafters, of course.
Trying to make @yasnippet work nicely with #companymode. There seems to be a backend company-yasnippet to be hooked into company-mode. Anyhow I don't understand how to properly use it with use-package. Esp. since the docs of that backend include women warning.
@kern I came across ringfairy and was able to serve a webring off of Caddy pretty quickly. Great project and I appreciate the fully static and minimal approach you've taken. We're implementing it for the #SystemCrafters community¹ so it's only in a test mode now. But I am excited so I wanted to share and thank you for a great project!
🔴 Today on #SystemCrafters Live, we'll discuss a major change I'm making to my Emacs configuration: the total removal of Evil Mode. We'll hack on my configuration a bit to figure out some ways to smooth out the transition.
@daviwil Could you add a link in the newsletter to read the #systemcrafters newsletter on your website with proper formatting? I receive them on a Gmail account and the newsletter looks awful both in HTML and in plain text (see attached). Thanks!
Just signed up for @daviwil's Hands on Guile Scheme course. He's an excellent instructor in his YouTube videos and I'm looking forward to this inaugural course.
It'll be helpful to have a good base to start from, my goal after the course is to be able to configure simple guix packages that I currently install through Ansible and also build some from source. https://systemcrafters.net/courses/hands-on-guile-scheme-beginners/
I can guix install emacs and get emacs 29.1
I can guix install emacs@29.1 and get emacs 29.1
However, I can't get any other version of emacs, I need to stay on emacs 28.2 but... guix install emacs@28.2 returns package version not found for 28.2 (same story for 28.1 and 27.1 which are both tagged releases).
What am I doing wrong? Searches isn't turning out an obvious issue, I would appreciate any pointers!
🔴 Today on #SystemCrafters Live, we'll try out Arei, a new IDE and REPL for Guile Scheme in Emacs written by @abcdw. This project aims to provide a more modern and robust development experience for Scheme compared to Geiser.
Let's see if we can hack on Guile projects more comfortably with Arei!
🔴 Today on #SystemCrafters Live, we'll attempt to use Guix to self-host our own Git "forge" using Forgejo!
We'll package the Forgejo binary and create a Guix service so that it can be hosted in a container. We'll also see if we can wire up Laminar to launch CI builds when you push to repositories!
🔴 Today on #SystemCrafters Live, we'll experiment with self-hosting various services like websites, an XMPP server, and possibly an IRC bouncer using Guix containers.
The twist here is that we will be deploying these containers inside of Debian so that they're easy to host in standard cloud service VMs!
I just developed my first roll of Kantmere Pan 100 B&W film. I'm buzzing with excitement that it all turned out despite my mistakes. I used the wrong box for instructions (FP4+ 120 that I'll develop next but the times were close enough) and cutting the strip off the canister before reeling it all the way out (through pure dumb luck I cut it perfectly between frames)!
@daviwil as long as you only care about the aesthetics of the process, creative choices in framing & focus, and not the results then I'm in.
This roll had 3 blank frames (I'm hoping from misfire and I'm not THAT bad at exposure). But it feels great to be in control of the entire pipeline. Honestly very much in the #SystemCrafters mindset!
🔴 Today on #SystemCrafters Live, we'll investigate a few options for improving the IRC experience so that more people might be able to join us there! The Matrix Libera.Chat bridge shutdown has been pretty tragic, let's try to address that.
Also, today we're experimenting with streaming ONLY on Twitch! No YouTube stream today. Let me know what you think!
🔴 Today on #SystemCrafters Live, we'll take a closer look at GNU Hyperbole, a package for Emacs that aims to streamline your Emacs workflow with unique features like smart keys, hypertext-style navigation, a note-taking outliner, and more.
Let's see if this package is a good fit for your workflow!
