On #YomHaShoah I think about the Jews of Švihov, whose torn Torah my shul was gifted with. We say Kaddish for them even though, for many of them, their first or full names are lost and we only have a last name or, at worst, birth year.
Only their Torah survived, and that was defaced. The shul is currently working to have it restored. But even when we first received it, almost 2 years ago, we gave it pride of place.
With the Torah comes a mandate to continue to remember the Jews who once revered & taught from it. Who were killed while their scrolls were warehoused by Nazis.
And also to continue to teach the world what hate can do & why people of love & solidarity must ALWAYS intervene.
I've been crying through this whole thread. Our Torah represents a whole village killed, whole families. Some of them were only small children.
This is why my shul takes its anti-racism and anti-hate work so seriously.
At the end of the original thread, I posted a link to our synagogue's website so folks could read more about the town, our scroll, and the #HolocaustTorah program more generally.
That is no longer possible. The site is now members-only because it was spammed by so much anti-Jewish hate.
Zaromb was a shtetl just on the Russian side after Germany and the Soviet Union occupied Poland. It was just a short distance from what would become the Treblinka death camp. Every year I post this memory book of Zaromb put together by survivors after the Shoah. Remember Zaromb. #YomHaShoah#Holocaust#Shoah
“All that was so near and dear to us and what is etched so deeply in our memories and in our souls, no longer exist. Our dear shtetele with its beloved Jewish mothers and fathers, brothers and sisters and little children, is no more. Gone is the shtetele, which was full of Jewish life, which strove for a better, and more secure future. Zaromb was a shtetl of dreamers and fighters, a shtetl always struggling to eke out a living and striving for a better life…”
On #YomHaShoah, we remember and honor the 6 million Jewish lives lost in the Holocaust.
As we honor their memory, we’re reminded that antisemitism persists today. We must stand united against hate in all its forms. Never again means never again.
Zu #YomHaShoah, dem Tag der Erinnerung an die Opfer der Schoa und an den jüdischen Widerstand gegen den Nationalsozialismus verweisen wir auf unsere Themenseite mit #Buchtipps aus letztem Jahr
Somehow I didn't get my Yellow Candle ordered this year. Maybe just as well as I always want to do more than light a candle. Takes it toll, and this year especially
So again I remember Henoh Aleksanderowitz, a 6 year old boy who was murdered at Auschwitz. His mother's youngest brother survived, one of perhaps 3 in the extended family, and submitted pages of testimony to Yad VaShem for 54 members of their family.
Please read the thread & help me remember them #YomHaShoah https://zirk.us/@emmaaum/110216019502643012
https://www.instagram.com/reel/C6oBfgkreiu/?igsh=MnpkODZzOTB5eTU4 For 60 seconds, everything stands still as we remember and dedicate our thoughts to the 6 million Jewish people (and many other souls) who were persecuted, murdered, or lived through the holocaust.
We do the same on Yom Hazikaron יום הזיכרון Memorial day for Israel’s Fallen Soldiers and Victims of Terrorism.
In a world where too many deny the atrocities of the holocaust, and now do the same with the atrocities done on Oct 7, remembering, reminding, and teaching about the holocaust feels more important than ever.
It is our duty - the people of the free world who want to live in a democracy - to do everything in our power to keep this world free from the present evil, before it is too late. And I do not mean for Jewish people only. I mean for the free world of the west. We must read the signs and learn from the past so that we have a future.
#YomhaShoah#JomhaSchoa
I’m planning to take my kid to #auschwitz next year when he turns 18. It would also be his introduction to #judaism. Does #jewish Masto know if #yomhashoah is a good time for this?
This Yom HaShoah I am remembering Henoh Aleksanderowitz who was born and lived in Klobuck, Poland in 1936 and was murdered at Auschwitz in 1942 when he was six years old.
His grandmother Zelda, mother Frajda, five year old sister Jona Tova, and 3 year old brother Jeheskel were also killed at Auschwitz. His father Moshe was killed at Treblinka.
At least 54 members of his family were also killed. Please keep reading to learn more.
