Root problem: Demand in research funding is much bigger than supply. Introducing: complicated grant application system to distribute funding.
20xx: Grant proposals are getting very complicated; writing bureaus are increasingly used to support researchers putting their ideas on paper in a way that increases their chances in winning the funding lottery. 1/x #Academia#Funding#LLM#ChatGPT
For every day I spend systematically answering e-mails, I leave dozens of books unread.
I already have an email policy in my syllabus, which says that I prefer to answer questions in class, since we see each other several days a week.
What other tips do you have that have worked for you?
Call for papers about "AI and Resilience" for a special issue of Frontiers in Artificial Intelligence. This is an interdisciplinary call for a range of perspectives. Critical, humanistic, cultural, historical perspectives are all welcome => https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/62761/ai-and-resilience
UC Santa Cruz alumni who work in tech are among the top earners in the industry according to new rankings from the Wall Street Journal and the Burning Glass Institute which have placed UCSC as the number 12 top public school for high-paying tech salaries!
So my university is looking for researchers to act as "ambassadors" to do a bucket list of promotion activities for the university and its values (over two years).
In return you get "communication coaching" and "increased visibility".
Obviously no mention of any other form of compensation for your time. That sort of thing is likely reserved for the people elaborating the ambassadorship program 🙃. #Academia#AcademicVenting
“We were surprised by how brazenly the male researchers described their priorities, for example that they actively didn’t respond to emails,” says Nanna Mik-Meyer, professor at Copenhagen Business School.
I'm leaving #academia behind, I've had enough. Does anyone have any good job recs for someone with a master's degree in cell biology and experience working with lab finances? I'd prefer to not have to relocate. I'm in the Seattle area
This article really resonates with me. The current system is untenable and most university administrations have taken away any agency that faculty have in the system.
From @gsoh31: "It is impossible to be a top-line manager and administrator and mentor and researcher and writer and outreach officer and IT expert and online instructor and pedagogical innovator and recruiter and teacher and marker and external examiner and press pundit and grant bidder and editor and look after your own wellbeing." https://voicesofacademia.com/2024/04/05/its-not-your-fault-that-academic-life-is-getting-harder-by-glen-ohara/
A pointed article about what is going wrong, in part, with academia.
“The growth of managerial and administrative grades responsible more and more for controlling academics rather than supporting them is one of the most important trends in the modern university. That structure emits a constant white noise and static of demands that don’t seem connected to lecturers’ training or aims”
Jrette is headed for engineering school in Lund. So I'm thinking about a Scanian project so I get to go there a lot, look at finds at the university's Historical Museum, have lunch with my kid. Might extend it to Zealand as well, it's not far.
Made me ask: what is the job of an editor in chief, and what kind of qualifications should an applicant have? And what kind of job is it – full time job, or part time? Paid or not? A practising scientist or a dedicated specialist? The ad doesn't specify much beyond the obvious.
Save the date: On Tuesday 7 May at 16:00 I'm giving an online practical talk on #OpenScience: “Doing Open Science in the Humanities: From Public Discourse to Qualitative Data”.
It's open to everyone, you can join even if you're not from Leiden University!
It's Alive!! The #openscience lab has moved in (well, almost everything) to its new home!! Interestingly we are occupying an almost abandoned corridor at #universityofsussex, with the goal of bringing needed updates and life to certain lab/#science/#research practices!
If you would like to chat anything open science do send me a message!
Looking for literature on German in the Netherlands for a sociolinguistics class next semester!
I'm especially interested the German-speaking communities abroad (who is part of it, what languages do they speak) & language ideologies around German in the Dutch context. Thanks! ☺️
What the holy hell is this?? (Answer: Microsoft Word a.k.a. Microsoft Turd on the iPad circa April 3 2024). Is this some April Fool’s leftover joke? #academia
