So I am teaching a master level course in astroparticle physics, which has about 15 students.

One of them consistently shows up, put his head on the desk during the break, and never lift it up for the full second hour.

😴
At least, he does not snore, and he's getting something useful out of my bla about cosmic rays.

Did anything similar happen to someone else? How did you deal with that?

alesssia,

@franco_vazza I was on the other side of that 20 odds years ago, bartending. At least your lesson is interesting enough to justify getting out of bed so early

Reading @mekkaokereke 's terrific thread on onboarding (https://hachyderm.io/@mekkaokereke/112219016968211952), and wondering what other / / in do.

I've a short document with all the main information on department/group life, which I share on day 1, but I don't think it's sufficient.

Does anyone have any resources/examples/ideas to share?

I'm re-reading the @thecarpentries's Instructors Training material for reasons, and, OMG, it's so well written and useful 🤩
I definitely need to set aside a day or so each year to refresh it

If anyone is interested in improving their skills, here is the link: https://carpentries.github.io/instructor-training/index.html

I've to give an impromptu talk, and I don't have anything ready

Thanks a lot

No, I cannot rank this student among their class (I have not taught classes at this institution!) & I cannot compare them as "2nd in 10"or similar among the master students I supervised: I supervised folks at three different institutions & systems in two different countries plus every one has their strength and weaknesses, there is no order from best to worst.

My reference letter will tell you nothing and you are wasting everyone's time because of your stupid form 😬

alesssia,

@franco_vazza @dimpase @vicgrinberg you are disappointed by this top 1% student, but have you interviewed the remaining 99%?

This metric doesn't make sense, so, please folks, just stop asking for it.

(Yes, all my students are top 1%. Who am I to zero their possibility to be interviewed?)

alesssia,

@franco_vazza @dimpase @vicgrinberg sorry if my complaint against the system wasn't clear.

I know that in this thread we all agree in disagreeing with its usage, but still too many institutions (and companies) ask about it. Those were the folks I was referring to 😬

@TarkabarkaHolgy as long as I don't become THAT downstairs neighbour, I can consider myself a decent human being

(And yes, I'm definitely THAT upstairs neighbour, please address your complaints to my two under two)

I just received a pitch email with the title "Your Writing on Teeth Whitening!"

It begins ...

"Hi Clive,

I’m reaching out to you because I noticed you wrote about teeth whitening in the past. I felt you might be interested in learning about us because we are known to have a best-selling whitening strip product on Amazon and are changing the oral care industry!"

I get a lot of positively unglued pitches, but this one made my day

It's been tremendous: meeting new people, joining terrific research projects, and fitting in some old ones.

Looking forward to a lot of years of new and exiting 🤟

I know this is not Linkedin, but I’m curious: what are the tools that help your personal the most?

[.] What works for me:

+] this basic pomodoro from @clive: http://text-pomodoro.glitch.me/ when I really need to focus

+] Zotero as a reference manager: https://www.zotero.org/, I would be lost without it

+] Github (desktop): my coding became much more focused, organized and reusable thanks to it: https://desktop.github.com/

+] GanttProject to realize how little time I have left… : https://www.ganttproject.biz/#is-easy

[.] What I tried but didn’t work for me:

-] Tasks “manager”: tried Obsidian, One Note, Google Keep, Notebook… I can’t seem to find The One that works for me (and syncs with my laptop & phone). Taking suggestions!

-] Something to read and annotate pdfs: I got a Remarkable2 tablet, and then an Onyx Boox Note Air 2, and they’re just too slow and do not easily sync with my laptop and Zotero. For the most important papers I have to say I might prefer paper.. Also taking suggestions for this.

Edit: trying to make the bullet points not disappear in is still hard

alesssia,

@plantarum @elduvelle @clive

I'm also using (a very simplified version of) the as todo list/task manager. I also use the same paper notebook to take notes, so it's all in one place. Easy to synconise, a bit more complicated to search 😅

I'm a big fan of , currently also testing , and experimenting with

alesssia,

@kofanchen @CCochard @elduvelle this year, having been employed in three institutions which block calendar share, I've bought an old style paper diary and it works wonder (if you use a pencil and are generous with the use of erasers 😅)

Bonus points: your private calendar is really private

So when I was in graduate school in 1993 and you wanted to compile a latex manuscript on an IBM 386 processer, you hit the button and went to get a cup of coffee. Five or ten minutes later, it would be done.

These days it happens in the blink of an eye.

So why is it that in 2023 basically every manuscript submission system in existance takes at least 10 minutes to latex a file?

alesssia,

@ct_bergstrom it does it in a blink of an eye, then it runs idle for 10 minutes (https://ludic.mataroa.blog/blog/i-accidentally-saved-half-a-million-dollars/)

Short story: I have curly hair. But I straighten it for work to appear “professional.” Or I wear a bun to look “serious.”

These ideas were shaped by social norms + experiences where I’ve been the only woman in the room or dealt w sexual harassment/bias.

But when my 15yo niece visited last week, I marveled at her stunning curls. “It just dries this way,” she said.

And it dawned on me - Wait, mine does too! Or would if I paid less attention to cultural expectations. So I think I’ll do that now.

alesssia,

@Sheril totally relate with this.

However, I've always refused to straighten my hair because I didn't want to waste my time to conform.
I've the same attitude to dyeing my whitening hair and must say it's equally penalising, if not more
