M4.6 earthquake in Baja, California (along the San Andreas Fault). Despite the gray line there and a few fences/walls, the earthquake got over the border #earthquake#Mexico#Baja#SanDiego
Today in Labor History January 29, 1911: The Mexican Liberal Party, led by the anarchist Magonistas, captured the Baja California border town of Mexicali, during their revolution in Baja California. Many members of the IWW participated in the revolution, which also conquered and held Tijuana and Ensenada for several days. Lowell Blaisdell writes about it in his now hard to find book, “The Desert Revolution,” (1962).
I would argue that Spain's current system of having to see a public health system doctor to get even one day off sick is counterproductive. Here I am, #covid test from last night clearly positive, in the doctor's waiting room with octogenarians and small children. I've been here an hour because the doctor's running late. I called the surgery ahead of time and, yes, I need to see the doctor in-person. We have masks, of course.
In UK you can self-certify a few days' off sick before you need to see a doctor.
They are thinking of doing the same in Spain but there's strong push-back from businesses saying "some people will only work two days a week, every week". Fine, give everybody up to, say, 10 days a year total of self-certified sick before having to see a doctor. Because, damn, the current arrangement is crazy.
Cool mineral specimens. I’m holding them up roughly in the position their custom mounts will be designed for. #california#minerals. And yes I collect California minerals, both Alta and #Baja.
Back to minerals. Here’s a new addition to my Baja collection. A pretty glassy-looking scheelite from El Fenomeno. Lights up in blazing blueish white under SW UV. #minerals#rocksandminerals#baja.
#Tammy in the Atlantic and #Norma in the Pacific are two very different storms but will hopefully offer modest impacts to the areas they threaten. Still, interests in the Caribbean (Tammy) and Baja (Norma) should monitor these storms.
Baja doesn’t have much infrastructure as is, with most of the peninsula without enough fresh water to sustain growth outside of the already established villages and cities. Hurricane Hilary is a significant threat to its vulnerable, beautiful communities - keep an eye on them, because I’m sure socal will get all the attention from the news cycles.
Hurricane Hilary is churning off Mexico’s Pacific coast as a powerful Category 4 storm threatening to unleash torrential rains on the mudslide-prone border city of Tijuana before heading into Southern California as the first tropical storm there in 84 years.
