Speaking of Festivals, here's Jeff Vandermeer's original article on "The Florida Freshwater Squid", going into great detail on the origin, biology and natural history of the Mayfly Squid. He ends with a first person recounting of his experiences at the annual Festival of the Freshwater Squid in Sebring, Florida.
It has everything, but I am most jealous of the spotted bobtail squid. My new (and only) career goal for 2024: use my glands to secrete an entire ghost forest made of ink and mucus and hide myself in it forever. No, Mr Potential Client, you can't find me on LinkedIn, because I'm the sigh of the wind in the underwater woods. I'm a ripple of moonlight refracted into rapture through fathom upon fathom of cold salt water. I'm a peal of Pan's laughter in the endless forests of the benthic zone. And don't even think about asking for an up-to-date CV.
The Octopus and the Evolution of Intelligent Life"
Although mammals and birds are widely regarded as the smartest creatures on earth, it has lately become clear that a very distant branch of the tree of life has also sprouted higher intelligence: the cephalopods, consisting of the squid, the cuttlefish, and above all the octopus.
Here's another fun rubber stamp I bought on this etsy shop https://www.etsy.com/shop/100ProofPress (i'm just a happy customer)
I really think this stamp deserves a cephalopod-worthy purple or maroon inkpad though... might have to buy a couple more stamp pad colors.
Cant wait to stamp this on the back of an envelope! I love making my card, postcard, and letter writing more fun. #fountainpen@penfount#journaling#fountainpenday#handwriting#cephalopods
US government considers protecting #octopuses used in #research
This announcement results from years of studies on cephalopod pain sensation, intelligence, and adaptation, combined with letters to US Congress members about the humane treatment of #cephalopods. https://arstechnica.com/?p=1973497
Did you know it's World Octopus Day? My favorite way to spend October 8 every year is to thank every person protecting these magnificent animals and their habitats! We can ALL just say NO to industrial octopus farming, a practice that hurts octopuses, the environment, all of us. #WorldOctopusDay#octopus#cephalopods#animals#animalwelfare#animalrights#environment
