The effective altruism cult is an inevitable, metastatic outgrowth of Silicon Valley’s infantile libertarian politics.

These guys never got past utilitarianism in their philosophical development, and effective altruism lets them invent a speculative majority their actions can benefit, at the expense of any minority they choose.

That effective altruism would become entangled with the most successful cryptocurrency criminal in the game isn’t an accident:

THEY ARE THE SAME GRIFT

@jessamyn @luis_in_brief @danilo I remember that too and it was highly stupid. But my problems with GiveWell go deeper and are really issues with EA overall. I wrote about some of them here: https://jacobian.org/2023/may/15/giving-it-all-away/#effective-altruism.

In particular, the supposed intellectual rigor ("measuring impact") that GiveWell supposedly provides turns out to be a load of BS. The signature cause of the EA movement, deworming, has been roundly debunked, yet orgs like GiveWell refuse to acknowledge the change.

Fascinating.

Listening to this made me think;

Is at the heart of really, a deep rooted mistrust of the human being?

Have the silicon valley masters in their ivory towers become so cynical of us plebes, that they’ve fundamentally lost trust in the collective intelligence of us as a species?

They seem to think so, because how I read their manifesto is that we’d be safer as subjects to a new machine god instead? 🤔

There is only one true form of : sky-high taxes on the wealthy to fund robust public services.

Don't let rich people trick you into thinking they're solving society's biggest problems by donating money only to their pet causes

(which earn them tax write-offs and also the ability to earn a lot more money by providing "market-based solutions")

I'd like to talk about something a little closer to home: in the field. I've been in this field for <mumble> years and worked for tiny companies, medium consulting companies, large orgs, and as a one-man independent contractor.

I actually love sending out these emails:

"This is your 2nd unsolicited email without spelling out how to opt out.

You are in clear violation of the CAN-SPAM Act and according to the FTC, each separate email in violation of the CAN-SPAM Act is subject to penalties of up to

$43,792.

Each one.

Do the math.

Oh and by the way, you AND the company you're promoting can BOTH legally be held responsible for violations and subsequent fines."
