Last week I helped a neighbor remove a massive desk and credenza from his mother's house. I'm hoping to repurpose some parts and recover some wood to make into new projects.

The pieces were custom-built by two different cabinetmakers in the early 1990's. If nothing else, it is very interesting to see, from an amateur hobbyist's perspective, the decisions and techniques that go into making pieces like this.

A large credenza with filing cabinets in very 1990's style red oak

thousandleaves,

The furniture is mostly made of plywood and veneered particleboard, which isn't very recoverable, but there is some solid oak trim. The drawers are quite well built and the drawer boxes are in good shape. I think I can reconfigure and re-face them.

Detail of the desk's drawer box construction. The classic locking tongue construction and attention to detail gains my approval.

@vaviurka requested a bed table for her laptop. She loves sitting in unergonomic positions, but it seems to work for her. My spine cramps up from just seeing this.

Anyways, let's see what I can bodge up with the stuff in the garage, without buying anything (shops are far). Probably it'll be wood with metal brackets for strength, but we'll see what I find.

Might involve some tool restoration first, the inherited stuff is mostly in a sorry state except for what I fixed last time.

Found some metal brackets. Not the right shape, but easily bent into 70° angle brackets in the vise.

After filing some burrs off the vise cheeks 🤪

Also found some nice medium density wood profile for the legs. No idea what wood it is, but much nicer than the usual cheap construction pine. Beech perhaps?

The mitre saw I mounted on a massive old sewing machine table did a good job cutting the angled ends.

Made a fid for the edge of the table, so the laptop can't slide off.

Used the slightly scary Soviet table saw for cutting the groove into it (where the table surface goes in).

Don't worry, I made some push sticks for this saw and treat it with the respect it deserves. It's a bit janky, but works well enough after giving it some attention last time.

Next I got a bit fancy and routed out the area for the metal bracket from the top end of the legs, so they can be flush against the bottom of the table surface.

Only I don't have a router, so I had to improvise a bit with the die grinder clamped into the workbench.

Almost ready for user testing, alas I'm a few screws short, so it's not a 100% garage scrounge job 😿

Also want to make some braces to connect the legs on each side.

One short table leg with the bent metal bracket attached to it with two screws. The bracket is recessed into the top of the leg.
The resulting table, upside down, with legs attached with only four out of 8 screws. The fid is fitted on the far edge and two slim wood pieces reinforce the sides.

Got some PVA glue at last, so I made these cross braces to stabilize the legs on either side against each other.

Another job for a router I don't have (it's on the list), but the die grinder with a router bit scorched its way through well enough.

Just letting the glue harden over night, then it's ready for testing. We'll see if it withstands @vaviurka's destructive powers.

Bed table for lazying with a laptop in bed - ready for user acceptance testing.

If it's performing well, I'll go spiffy it up with some varnish, but first it goes to QA.

Same table, flipped upside down showing the metal brackets holding the legs. A welded reinforcement of the angle has appeared on each bracket since last time.
