A DELICATELY HAUNTING THAI novel unfolds like a late-night story from its protagonist, a monk in his 90s telling tales of his youth in the remote jungles of the late 19th century, where tigers and crocodiles lurked in the darkness. Stunning. A MINUS

Another author with not-the-usual historical fiction is Bryn Hammond, who writes about the Mongols! Along with the two books pictured here, there's a short Mongol story - "Women Who Lie Alone in Tombs" (ie die unmarried) and a short about Shakepeare and Marlow called "The Last Play". A great chance to explore new writers of queer historical fic!

18: Do you write primarily in the same genre you read as a child?

I was a voracious reader across genres ... but the thing that suddenly occurred to me was how much I loved Victoria Holt's gothic novels as a tween (although we didn't have that term then) and teen. Reading Anya Seton's "Green Darkness" as a teenager made me a historical fiction fan for life ... and that's the primary genre I write. So, the answer is "yes, and ..."

Book review # 24 for 2024 is Kristin Hannah's The Women. Wow! This was my first Hannah read! Wow! Powerful and a very, very, strong reminder of what Vietnam did to people, including women who served, in that terrible conflict. A strong character driven novel. ☕☕☕☕ review. @books @bookstodon @bookstodon ,

@penpencilbrush @claudiac @bookstodon Have to thank you again for recommending Blackwells. Although I am a solid supporter of my local independent bookstore and public library sometimes they just can't get books that aren't published in Canada or in North America. Blackwells delivered Hannah Kent's wonderful Devotion and Maggie Shipstead's excellent Astonish Me. So grateful to finally have the opportunity to read these marvellous .

Everything in this story is leading somewhere amazing. It's emotional, beautiful, touching, surprising and so incredibly moving. Sniffed, snuffled and out and out cried my way through the last part of this book.

@kcfromaustcrime @bookstodon Finally got hold of this beautifully written multi-levelled love story. Like her other two brilliant novels of #historicalFiction, she shows she has done the research and thinking and internalized the stories and feelings of the time and place as well as the relentless control and persecution of the feminine and the 'other'. This 3rd novel is personal for Kent. Highly recommend it.
