🌋 Io: New image of a lake of fire, signs of permanent volcanism
—Ars Technica

「 By combining the imaging power of lots of smaller telescopes scattered across a plateau, ALMA is able to spot regional differences in the presence of specific elements in Io's atmosphere, as well as identify different isotopes of those elements 」

Lava poured from a volcanic fissure near the town of Grindavík, Iceland, in spring 2024. The eruption, which began on March 16 and remained active over two weeks later, was the largest in a string of four volcanic events on the Reykjanes peninsula starting in December 2023...

Granitic xenoliths in a basalt chunk on Calavera’s old volcano in Carlsbad Ca.

CWilbur,

This stuff isn’t really basalt. I misspoke. Local geologic maps show the system as a dacite plug with associated extrusive deposits. That’s probably why the granitic xenoliths are stable. Mantle xenoliths like dunite would likely react with the magma. Mantle xenoliths are much more common in the Mojave, associated with the alkali basalts there

Silahkan mampir.

No new model of the dike under Grindavík available today; it should be out tomorrow.

Eruption undersea SW of #Grindavík is now seen as less likely, as is an unusually large eruption. An eruption would most likely be in/near Grindavík at a similar scale to recent eruptions in the area.

Note that said "recent scale" still involves lava fountains ~50m tall, an #eruption lasting several months, and a couple tenths of a cubic kilometer of #lava

NadWGab,

This large amethyst geode is on display in the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh. It formed 130 million years ago when there was intense volcanism in Brazil. Enough lava was produced to cover the British Isles in 3.2 km of lava flows. Amethyst then crystallised in cavities in the solidified lava

Two very large geodes on a plinth. Their outer surface is black and pitted and their cavity is filled with amethyst crystals.
A close up of the geode. There is a layer of grey and brown between the black volcanic rock and the purple amethyst crystals.
