The Mysterious Dodecahedrons of the Roman Empire

The first of many of these puzzling objects was unearthed almost three centuries ago, and we still don’t know what they were for.

by Frank Jacobs, Big Think May 12, 2023

"In the first episode of Buck Rogers, the 1980s television series about an astronaut from the present marooned in the 25th century, our hero visits a museum of the future. A staff member brandishes a mid-20th-century hair dryer. “Early hand laser,” he opines. As an observation of how common knowledge gets lost over time, it’s both funny and poignant. Because our museums also stock items from the past that completely baffle the experts..."

Well, at least they didn't think the hairdryer was for a fertility ritual.

I was too curious about the sweet potatoes (underplanted under tomatoes) and lifted one. Not too bad. This year's Christmas dinner will see our own sweet potatoes.

This is a low tunnel. The hoops are 1/ 4 in pvc held up by conduit straps on the outside of a raised bed. The greenhouse plastic clamps and connectors came from groworganic.com
Edges held down by fence poles & concrete blocks on the end. I used ag fabric inside & had kale, chard survive without heat during the polar vortex winter (-20F). I'll be honest, @ 20' long a pain to get inside from the ends!

Hubs brooming snow off the low tunnels. You can see some clamps holding the plastic on. We used two on top between ribs & 3 on each side down the ribs. There are fence poles on the ground holding down the bottom. These beds are 20' long & 4' wide for reference. No problems with wind or snow load.

One way of practicing is by using frost blankets over your beds in cold weather. Here in zone 7, I use Eliot Coleman's double blanket technique most winters with hoops/without a poly tunnel. If you are planning to try this, 2 suppliers I've used are running sales so I'm sharing:

My first foray into overwintering was to plant garlic. Garlic needs to be ordered now. It sells out fast! You break apart the cloves, put them in the dirt, add bonemeal, and cover with straw at first freeze.

Signs of collapse and signs of an ecological society emerging coexist right now, in my opinion. The news covers the scary parts, and we need to know, and not look away. But lets not miss the little shoots of a saner more connected ecological-social-economic system either. What's a hint of a life-sustaining society emerging you've seen of late?

Many of our friends & colleagues seem to be leveling up. All flowers are now some veg + polinator gardens.Small gardens got bigger. Big gardeners are adding fowl.
Carnivore friends buy locally farmed meat together. More people trade meatless meal ideas.
Fishing friends worry about ocean temps.

Adding solar, water filtration, replacing cars w/hybrid or EV, looking at e-bikes has become "just smart financially" instead of the "hippie crap" label of 10 years ago.

I don't talk a lot about local politics, or how crazy things are in rural Florida these days. I want to share a local story, that's been brewing for a long time, today.

I'm pretty sure most of us have at least heard of book bans in Florida schools. What, I think, goes underreported and under discussed is just how terrifying that is for teachers. You'll find some debate about it, DeSantis says it's not true, but, as Florida schools go back into session this week a lot of the teachers my wife and I know are afraid of accidentally committing a 3rd degree felony. How? By having someone find the "wrong" book in their classroom. They've all emptied the shelves of all books, period, but there's still fear.

https://www.firstcoastnews.com/article/news/verify/florida-teacher-could-face-a-third-degree-felony-for-using-books-literature-in-class-not-approved-by-state/77-9f5a087f-8dcd-4a99-afe1-c9c23b6201cd

So, how is this playing out in my local school district? I'm not naming names because I think these poor people need a break.

Ever since a Moms 4 Liberty member got elected to our school board last year, it's been wild. Every school board meeting is jam packed with right wingers cursing and often threatening the other board members. There is one board member, in particular, who is often the focus of their scorn. She also happens to be a former principal and the woman who hired my wife for her first teaching job and a former mentor.

Last year someone was waiting by her car after a meeting with a hatchet and threatened to kill her and her family, if you want to imagine the environment here. For a while she quit going to meetings in person, and was allowed to attend virtually, for her own safety, but because of right wing pressure she's not allowed to do so this year.

This background all brings me to something I learned this morning. Back when my kids were in the local school district(we pulled our kids out and my wife left to teach elsewhere in 2021) there was this super sweet, older lady who was the librarian at their elementary school. She really liked our older boy, in particular, who is a voracious reader, and over the years she would tell his teachers just to send him to the library when he was done with his work. He would read, help shelve books, and even sit at the help desk to help other kids. She went so far above and beyond for the school. She organized plays, she bought books out of her own money...she was the glue that held that school together.

A couple years back she took a well deserved promotion to Head Media Specialist for the entire district. As such, when DeSantis began his book banning crusade she was made the head of a group of 7 people who decide, for the entire district, what books need to be pulled from libraries. Because book banning isn't happening fast enough for the Moms 4 Liberty crowd, she was outed at a school board meeting over the summer as the head of this group. No one else was named.

Since then she's endured non-stop threats. It only took me a few minutes to find her social media this morning and it's disgusting and has been, non-stop, for months.

As I was reading it I couldn't help but think of a very brief interaction I had with @StillIRise1963 yesterday. This is just one example of what's happening with the Dems down here, sadly.

Not FL BUT
In NJ (union NJEA) + 3 other union jobs over my lifetime. I can tell you that here it is illegal for teachers to strike. Members have & we donate to their bail funds. They do get arrested/jailed. Some districts had "morals clauses" that you could be fired (even if tenured) for illegal conduct.
There was a push for us to join the Teamsters years ago. We should have. Interconnectedness=Power

Good morning friends! This week I'd like to share another US seed source with you.

This is another great place to look for unusual crops. One of my favorite things about them is that they offer "grex", which is an open source breeding mixture of seeds. I like supporting farmers & plant breeders mid-project. Plus there's a chance that something randomly wonderful can happen, & you can grow a strain that really likes your land!

So what type of colonizing did your family do?

ArtseaGardener,
@ArtseaGardener@mstdn.social avatar

@BlackAzizAnansi oh lots & all shitty. Earliest were plantation owners in Virginia & enslavers. My branch went north after the Civil War, pretended they were English immigrants. Scum.

Middle group came during the 1900s from Ireland & Hungary. All settled on Leni Lenape land.

My generation adopted non-white kids.

My Taino/Brazilian nibling will inherit my little home & food forest we've set up for survival. Land will return to a Native/mixed person & the curse will be broken I hope.

friends, I need some advice. Do any of you use a greenhouse?
Used to low polytunnel for year-round gardening, too disabled now. My close zone has been eaten by groundhogs so hubs is willing to start over. We have hurricanes, nor'easters so a hightunnel is not a good fit plus I use a wheelchair. Can't roll sides up etc. Need auto venting possible, not heating I use double blankets, hobby sized. Will reuse 20 gallon grow bags on top of hardware cloth. 1/2

I'm growing enough lettuce to completely replace store bought, and I grew it from seed I saved from last year!

What other plants are easy to grow and abundant enough to save you money on groceries?
@plants @gardening

ArtseaGardener,
@ArtseaGardener@mstdn.social avatar

@datatitian @plants @gardening shallots
You plant one bulb & harvest 5 or 6 magically. And because they are stronger tasting than onions, you need less to flavor food.
I usually chop them in the food processor, add enough olive oil to make them goopy, and freeze in ice cube trays. One cube flavors most things in a frying pan. Two if you want an onion heavy flavor. Yum!

Distractions aside, should we all be cultivating indoor produce?🤔

ArtseaGardener,
@ArtseaGardener@mstdn.social avatar

@StillIRise1963

You know, I might need to ponder on this more.

Greens/herbs would be easy & smart.

Something w/ dense calories like sweet or regular potatoes might work. No pollination needed.

Peppers are perennial in southern climates; they'd probably do ok but you'd need to hand pollinate? Pole beans, tomatoes, cukes same.

ArtseaGardener,
@ArtseaGardener@mstdn.social avatar

@StillIRise1963 I mean you'd need to hand pollinate. Not perennial to my knowledge.
I used to garden year round in unheated hoop houses. Too disabled now so this really resonates with me!

ArtseaGardener,
@ArtseaGardener@mstdn.social avatar

@whknott @StillIRise1963

Potatoes, grains, true. BUT managed to grow enough herbs, beans, shallots, garlic, greens, tomatoes, peppers, eggplants & sweet potatoes that my family of 2 never needed to purchase them. My veggie area is 1500 Sq ft, raised beds & grow bags mostly. 200 sq ft under winter plastic but I cant crawl in now. Switched to perennial veg there. We ferment, dry, freeze & can. You can supplement quite a bit w/o living off your garden. Every bit helps I think. We should all try.

ArtseaGardener,
@ArtseaGardener@mstdn.social avatar

@StillIRise1963

herbs are expensive! If you can afford a dehydrator & live in a humid area, I'd recommend that too. I did "witch" drying for years but it's unreliable now & stove method is too hot inside. Dehydrator = you can buy extra at the market when on sale if you dont have space/time to grow. For example I dry basil, oregano, parsley, rosemary, sassafrass leaf for filé powder, lavender, chamomile, hibiscus, lemon balm, mint, plus figs for us, friends, family so it gets a lot of use.
