Over the weekend, Nordstrom vacated its multi-level store in the downtown Westfield Mall. This was the end of a 35 year run.

My suggestion? Open an amusement park. With water slides!

My father wanted to be the next Walker Evans or Robert Frank.

My mother remembers it differently.

"Instead of paying the dentist, your father spent a lot of money on an expensive camera so he could take pictures of people without their heads or feet."

"Oh look. The trees in Bernal Heights are purple!"

There's a stupid joke we used to tell in the mathematics department at Cornell:

An economist, a physicist, and a mathematician are riding on a northbound train in England. And just when they cross the border into Scotland, the first thing they see is a lone black sheep, standing in a field, grazing on the grass.

"Oh look," says the economist, waving his hands. "The sheep in Scotland are black!"

"Over-generalizing again," huffs the physicist. "We only know that ONE sheep in Scotland is black, nothing more."

"Not precisely," tisks the mathematican. "The fact is, we only know that ONE SIDE of one sheep in Scotland is black."

Happy Monday, everyone.

The orangutan's trial has resumed and once again I'm glued to the blow-by-blow reporting by @GottaLaff. With court now in recess for lunch, it's time to post.

Taken a few weeks ago, here is a picture of one of the courtrooms at the James R. Browning Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco. Yes, this place is as serious as it appears here.

Today is the 10th anniversary of when we first met. Somehow we ended up married.

"Oh this looks like a good place to set up a metal tripod," I said.

Posting a flashback to the one and only time I photographed lightning. Twelve years ago a group of us set out to shoot wind turbines in Rio Vista. And lucky us, we ran into one of those exceedingly rare, twice a year, Bay Area thunderstorms.

Rare. And sparse. There were maybe only six lightning strikes that night, over the course of one hour. And me, not having a lightning shutter trigger and no way to predict if, when, or where something would strike, did the only thing possible: I pointed the camera down a road, stood there patiently, and took 40 one-minute exposures using a wide angle lens. I got lucky. Something happened.

I follow enough storm chasers to know this is lame. But I was happy.

Digging through my Lightroom catalog, I noticed this one was a five minute six second exposure, which is unusual for impatient me.

Anyway, here's the Bay Bridge.

Note: From time to time, I will be posting street portraits taken at street fairs and the like.

They won't always be your cup of tea. But these pictures are a big part of my life - my gay life - here in San Francisco. It's been a good life, full of men and women who, with these portraits, I celebrate.

So interspersed with pictures of flowers, cats, buildings, and the occasional scenic landscape... there will be this. Because this is part of what I see and live.

Exactly one year ago, I made my first post on Mastodon. I uploaded the following picture and wrote:

"Just setting up my tent. Give me a few days to settle in. I have pictures... and opinions, although I haven't figured out the rules of this suburb yet, so I'm being extra nice."

I'm still here, and still being mostly nice.

Just 2 days to go, ho ho.

I'm unusually cheery today because I started back at the gym after taking a 20 month break. It feels good. Sore, but good.

Anyway, here's a Christmas shot for you. Shot. Get it?

"Not today. Not today."

Yesterday, my pathology report came back CLEAN. And an hour ago the surgeon called to confirm: the bladder tumor was benign. There was some damage apparent from last years pelvic radiation but otherwise it was fine. Last year's cancer did not spread.

She said the magic words: "I can give you a clean bill of health, Bob."
