    And I'm off. Heading to Asheville to see my 97 y.o. mother. Husband will hold the fort while I'm gone. SFO at 4:30am is surprisingly busy.

    Behave yourselves, people :)

    Hum. I don't know what these are but I spotted them yesterday in Golden Gate Park's Botanical Garden which means they are botanical. Probably poisonous.

    Enjoy.

    @SomeGadgetGuy Depends on what kind of story you want to tell.

    Color says "we had a pleasant hike on Saturday."

    B&W says "our wagon train was in the trail for 5 days, looking for water and a place for our horses to rest."

    Personally, I like the B&W... and the take you could spin.

    @SomeGadgetGuy Every landscape can be made better by the addition of a dead body. That's just basic Photography 101.

    On a serious note, for image quality, I like the stark contrast of the B&W. It's crisper.

    My toast is burnt like halfway way up the dial. Why do the higher settings even exist?
    Who are these people sending slices of bread down to hell?

    BobHorowitz,
    @BobHorowitz@sfba.social avatar

    @Skepticat The higher settings are for English muffins. They seem to be made from asbestos or something. Heatwise and flavorwise.

    I guess, after five months and 350 photos, it's time for an introduction. This is me, Bob, and that thing on my shoulder is my first pet.

    I'm an amateur photographer who, according to my mother, has no style.

    "YOU HAVE NO STYLE, BOB."

    She's right. I used to teach photography and Photoshop, so I know a lot of tricks... and yet somehow I have no discipline when it comes to using them.

    So shooting and post-processing is like spinning a roulette wheel. Every photo is guaranteed to be different from the last... and nothing will ever hang together as a collection.

    I'm just happy when I can make something postcard-worthy.

    @kboyd
    100% !!!!

    When I'm out shooting, I can see how I want the picture to look even before I press the shutter. Gradually, I've learned to do in post what I've visualized in my brain. Shamelessly, I might add.

    But I'll never be as good as Hipstamatic when it comes to casting light and shadows :)

    BobHorowitz,
    @BobHorowitz@sfba.social avatar

    @kboyd Yep, I frequently change my mood and want to go back and process pictures later. Sometimes it's because I learn a new technique... and sometimes just because I dislike the result or even something as simple as the crop or frame.

    Good pictures, btw.

    @DemocracySpot @SkibuSmith Gotta be honest here... by another measure, life in the gay community in SF was a struggle until 1995-96, when the first protease inhibitors were introduced and used in for AIDS treatment in combination with the older, very much less effective AZT/ddI/ddC drugs.

    Life changed completely in August, 1998, when the Bay Area Reporter finally published an issue with zero AID obituaries. Living in the Castro the previous 15 years was like living under a dark, dark cloud.

    So in a couple of hours I'll be heading back into surgery because the last PET scan and exam showed something was odd and maybe the cancer isn't gone. Or maybe it is. Dunno. But my pipes, they are old and rusty.

    Anyway, it will probably be 7-10 days before the pathology report comes back, and 2-3 weeks of recovery... so I may be grumpy for awhile. Okay, grumpier.

    This is an actual map of my intestines after the previous surgery.

    Two hours of take-offs and landings at San Francisco Airport, 8 to 10pm on a Friday night.

    It was bitter cold. And this was perhaps the longest time I ever spent taking pictures in one spot, talking to myself and cursing throughout most of the evening.

    FYI, this is a merge of 20-25 photos, each about 60 seconds long. Towards the end of the shoot, the fog started rolling in.
