Actual shot from the operating room: the doc and anesthesiologist working on my butt.

So far okay... fissure, fistula, infection. Biopsy will be back next week. I am currently doped up and happy.

Golden Gate Park.

I have insomnia - worried about Thursday's operation - so I don't know what to do except post here instead of tossing and turning. Good morning, everyone.

Love Among The Ruins...

Sometimes I want to offer a word of encouragement or comfort, usually to a mutual, but sometimes not.

I compose a few words in my head and they seem cliched or presumptuous (do we know each other *that well), and in the end, I move on, feeling guilty.

Sometimes, I'll 💙 or 🙏 but except for LOLs, emojis feel weird and inadequate or wrong. Too often.

Long way of saying, I see and care about so much and so many people here, and that may not always be evident.

May peace be with you. x ❤️

@DemocracySpot Any exchange matters. Even likes and emojiis... they send acknowledgment that you saw and paid attention. Words are even better. And that is something I think you do well.

Missing Mom. ❤️

It's been two years today. COVID. She was 85.

BobHorowitz,
@BobHorowitz@sfba.social avatar

@DemocracySpot There are so many things I could say but none adequately sum up the grief that comes from the loss of a mother. I feel for you, Eddie. Mother's are complicated, but they still are our mothers.

Oncoming traffic, Market and Valenica. There's a lovely cocktail bar there, Martuni's, where the pianists used to play show tunes.

My gayness is showing, isn't it.

Add: you are spot on, identifying this. The mannequin head came from the San Francisco Institute of Cosmetology and Esthetics. Jim works there as thie IT manager... and I've done some shooting there.

And in other news, we have a firm date and location for my upcoming butt surgery: March 21st, in the surgical center at 450 Sutter.

450 Fucking Sutter!!! As magnificent as my butt is, 450 Sutter is even more so. Designed by architect Timothy Pflueger, the circa-1929 downtown medical office tower is famous for its streamlined exterior and Neo-Mayan Art Deco ornamentation on the entrance and in the interior lobby (shown below).

Anyway, things are moving along. I feel good some days, achy and tired on others (side-effects from past cancer treatments linger). But I'm getting by, cooking, occasionally hiking... and once a week I have enough energy to get to the gym. With luck, by the end of April, normal life awaits us as long as the biopsies come back clean👍

For some reason this one reminds me of one of my mother's stories about the night she and a group of other residents in Independent Living snuck into the main kitchen and raided the freezer for ice cream because that night's dinner was so bad none of them could eat it.

"We got the ice cream but the director heard us from all the way out in the lobby because Judy in 4420 wouldn't stop talking... and when the director flipped on the kitchen lights EVERYONE SCATTERED LIKE COCKROACHES IN EVERY FUCKING DIRECTION."

@DemocracySpot That landmarked school at Notre Dame plaza was converted into affordable senior housing in the late 90's. I remember them hollowing out the building. They did a nice job with the conversion.

The organ player at St. Mary's.

BobHorowitz,
@BobHorowitz@sfba.social avatar

While I am on the subject, here is the Cathedral of St. Mary of the Assumption from the outside.

This was a a 27 second exposure, taken at the end of the evening blue hour, when it was actually fairly dark outside. The length of the exposure turned the almost-black night into day.

/Editorial: the brutalist structure is quite striking... lovely, actually... while the Archdiocese that is homed here is less so. Headed by an anti-gay archbishop and mired in Chapter 11 protection following 500+ lawsuits alleging decades of child abuse and coverup, let's just say I am not a fan of the organization.

Ok, at the prompting of @saint_monkey, I found this in my Lightroom catalog.

This is Saint Mary's Tit: a shadow created on sunny days around 2 or 3pm. The shadow provides amusement for all the teenage boys in the neighborhood.

It's miraculous. And silly.
