Well that was certainly one hell of a storm!
160-190 km/h winds, about 800 000 people left without electricity in my Region alone, and roads are blocked around my city as so many trees were ripped out of the earth…

I live on the last floor of my building, and the flat was battered the whole night by these winds, it was insane!

Corb_The_Lesser,

@thelinuxEXP I live near the coast of North Carolina here in the US. From reports I've read, that storm is equivalent to a strong tropical storm or weaker hurricane here. (I haven't seen any reporting of sustained wind speed but the gusts are certainly within range.)

Glad you and your building are intact. Hope the recovery effort goes well

Probably the most annoying thing about Linux and my biggest problem is the lack of global menu support. Really frustrating.

Corb_The_Lesser,
@Corb_The_Lesser@mastodon.social avatar

@billyjoebowers The Ubuntu Unity spin uses a global menu out of the box. One can be bolted onto KDE.

We won't see a universal global menu in Linux because there is no way to enforce the standards required to enable it on all desktop environments, windows managers, and applications. Plus there are thousands of old pieces of software that no one will ever modify for a global menu scheme.

This is a feature of both the right and left. It's not a big step from thinking you've acquired the secrets of the universe to thinking that means you need to be in charge.

No. As a researcher and educator, I believe in providing clear, accurate information.

The "evidence" that the election was stolen is made up bullshit. To call it anything else is a disservice.

    @Teri_Kanefield Several services offer web-based feed readers with free/paid tiers used with a browser and/or app. This permits easy syncing between devices. I.e., if you read something on your phone, your laptop will show it as “read”. And they don’t care what operating system you use.

    Standalone apps do the same but all your data is maintained on that device, getting in the way of syncing. Reeder is a good app for MacOS and, I think, iOS.

    I do wonder how many people are staying on Twitter due to follower count alone. Having had an account for over a decade, I'd have previously estimated about 20% of my followers were dead accounts. Based on now leaving and making new accounts on other platforms, my estimate is closer to 90%.

    As a blogger I've always known only like 1% of people who retweet/like a post actually clicked the link and read the article, but I assumed that was just a social media thing. Having experimented with basically every other platform, I learned it's more likely that a significant number of Twitter engagements are fake, and those that aren't don't really care enough to read your work, they'll just give you a retweet/like for appearances.

    Corb_The_Lesser,
    @Corb_The_Lesser@mastodon.social avatar

    @malwaretech If a tweet publicizing an article posted elsewhere has its own standalone value, there's no harm in retweeting it without reading the article.

    FWIW, I routinely unfollow accounts that only hype something the account holder has written.
