Firstly, has the bouba-Kiki thing repeatedly been found true?

Secondly, has anyone tried to extrapolate universal grammar from it and seen what happens?

Very quick canvassing amongst any users...

Got a question from a client about accessibility of embedded soundcloud widgets e.g. https://www.nhm.ac.uk/visit/galleries-and-museum-map/hintze-hall.html and would appreciate any high level thoughts/feedback/warnings from the wider community.

Feel free to share!

Also welcome any thoughts on where on the current website would it be expected to find the audio guides for the Hintze Hall, but this isn't a proper test or anything 😅 (if you're up for that, send me a private message and will add you to the list of folks for paid testing opportunities, coming very soon...)

I don't know why but I find the fact that kakapos are parrots so hilarious, it always makes me smile to remember it.

So... I am probably very late to the game but hey, if you've ever found yourself wondering where that slightly niche period drama might have gone (especially if it used to be on YouTube...), check out uktvplay.co.uk. Free (it has ads), properly legal (not that I'd particularly care but good to know) and you don't need a TV license to watch.

Currently re-watching the House of Eliott which is just what I needed for the week it's been!

I think I'm over COVID enough to get cracking on my research proposal and I want to start as I mean to go on - by centering critical, Black, indigenous and queer perspectives.

SO in that light...

Anyone got references for QTPOC and critical BIPOC , philosophers working on cognition, [transfer], knowledge construction, of knowledge, networks theory, ?

Please do share!

OK rolls up sleeves

Let's get to closing some of these tabs.

Standing at the bus stop like an aphid. Some kind of monster red and black creature is eating the guy next to me, but the monster isn't eating me so... why panic?

Oh no now he's eating the lady on my right. Maybe I should leave? But I need to catch the bus.

(This is why aphids need help from ants. They just don't notice when there's a monster eating everyone. )

FINOkoye,
@FINOkoye@mastodon.social avatar

@futurebird 🤣 It does always make me laugh that they'll have the wherewithal to do a warning dance against me, a clumsy giant too far away to do any harm, but suddenly go all sleepy when the local ladybird gang want a snack.

Like, OK kids whatever makes you feel like you're doing something...

Something happened today which is so amazingly lucky I can only be supremely thankful!!

Overall, I really am an inordinately lucky person so I really try to pass it on or to involve others in my strange luck so they get some too.

Very annoying how (and Central Asian) modernism always gets missed out of narratives like this: http://makardesign.tilda.ws/...

FINOkoye, to accessibility
@FINOkoye@mastodon.social avatar

here's a question. Can one make text flow to best fit the size of the viewport, rather than the 'screen'?

I'm not sure this even makes sense, but I ask this because I've been thinking about how to best design content for extreme zoom, and I'm looking for experiments where the user doesn't have to scroll, even at say 500%.

FINOkoye,
@FINOkoye@mastodon.social avatar

@octothorpe (and @joelanman, hope you don't mind me replying this way), thank you both.

And yes @octothorpe, that sounds like what I was thinking of e.g. https://www.figma.com/proto/NXpy1pAkJko3FLo25ne47w/Accessible-text-experiments?page-id=0%3A1&type=design&node-id=1-2&viewport=224%2C147%2C0.54&t=CAOGXfBJgIO51Rkq-1&scaling=scale-down&mode=design

It makes sense that it would require a lot of work, but would it esp. so for mobile devices as opposed to e.g. a resized browser?

futurebird, (edited ) to random
@futurebird@sauropods.win avatar

What would it take to make text-only, low-bandwidth websites/web apps fashionable again? If connectivity is poor: enjoy a more vintage experience. For safety/accessibility or for those with satellite phones it also seems important for emergencies.

(You’d think the “mobile friendly” web pages would have been about this. But, ‘mobile friendly’ design seems more about taking away features & reveling, like a greed-driven fiend hot with amoral avarice, since your targets might not have adblock.)

FINOkoye,
@FINOkoye@mastodon.social avatar

@futurebird Oh this (and how we ethically hack SEO/bring back webrings for Black organisations) is a fave design challenge of mine.

There is a lot of cool stuff to be done with CSS and typography, as both art and text.

No, you are not using "AI" in your UX process. You're either using a jumped up pattern matcher or a mechanical Turk that's destroying the planet.

Thank goodness I only got into this field to fund whatever community [STEM/design] stuff I thought was needed because you should all be ashamed of yourselves. Just pure nonsense left, right and centre.

FINOkoye,

Can't even make accessible carousels and you're here pretending that a service with an inherent tendency to exacerbate bias is even worth using for stuff like tagging your quotes.

Jog on, my loves!

I really can't complain. So many fabulous opportunities right now, getting to consult and work across different sectors and even better most are things I can work on independently with amazing comrades I've met along the way!

I mean sure I won't get to sleep until April 2024 but what the hey... 😂

Like, this time next year all going well I might have three chapters (two academic, one lay) published?! And a whole ass Black history microsite? And an online journal? Not to mention cool strategic stuff across local museums and scientific research departments...

Honestly I am so grateful to be able to put this hodgepodge of skills into shit that actually matters.

Lost a suitcase today on the train (if anyone was on the 10am train from London Liverpool street to Norwich and saw a bright blue 'it' suitcase on the rack above the seats, hit me up! ), overspent on train tickets BUT got to see a friends' exhibition and hang out with them for the first time in person in literal years which was lovely

Any examples of accessible AND innovative/intriguing online collections design? Whether for Museums, online galleries, libraries, independent craft shops?

Some visually inspiring (but not especially accessible) examples from me:
