Tunisian - a new rabbit hole?

I learned the basics in the 1970ies, but didn't do much with it. A pillow cover a few years ago was a bit of a fiasco, so again, I put it away.

But today I saw this (which I mistook for a KAL initially).

https://knitterknotter.com/tunisian-blanket-cal-2024-hexagons-designed-by-cal-participants/

I now I want to try again - but with less splitty yarn than last time. And with much more attention to keep an even gauge.

Is it possible to "mute" a shop on etsy?

I searched on there and one article looked "fishy" - sold as "handmade" with questionable material and a dubios size chart, a quick reverse picture search found it on aliexpress.

I never want to stumble upon articles from that seller ever again.

Third time's the charm.

It's my third attempt weaving 2/1 #twill on my #RHL (rigid heddle loom). The first and second time I made errors during the threading stage and had to re-thread the whole thing at least once. But this time it went smoothly from the get go. I still had to use a threading plan, but it seems I've now found one, that I understand and that is easy to follow. Or I just was more focused. Whatever.

On to #weaving.

- who do you give the most of your creations to?

It's probably half and half my partner and myself.

Yes, I'm mostly a selfish crafter. A (somewhat distant) third is my daughter, but with her there are times when I make quite a lot and then there might be two years, when I don't make anything at all.

Somewhat recently she got 4 pairs of socks.

Or maybe invisible mending?

About halfway down in the post there's a picture showing a diagonal darn. Someone in the comments says, it's done that way to get a stretchy result.

It makes sense in a way, but I've never before seen this. Has anyone tried it? Results? Ideas?

Most weaving darns I do are on the underside of socks and stretchiness isn't that much of a concern.

Ends woven in, pre-washing.

Color is somewhat accurate in the picture, it's a blueish green, maybe sage? It goes well with the different shades of purple I dye my hair (one shade at every given time, but sometimes it's more lavender and at other times I choose bright 🟣).

Now off to washing it.

So much to learn about weaving.

I just found this older blog post about a weaving conference in 2016. It was just about braids and bands, but oh my, what a variety of techniques and ideas.

So much to explore.

#ThrowbackThursday

The first (and so far only) pair of socks knit from handspun yarn.

They were really comfy, but the yarn didn't withstand the wear and tear of being worn in shoes so they didn't survive for more than one or two winters.

But I loved them while they lasted.

Maybe I should try again - I was a fairly novice spinner back then, I think I learned a bit about yarn integrity since.

How to spot

I really hate this trend of creating AI pictures of crafts. I want to see what actual creators can do with the tools and materials and get inspiration from that. AI made pictures aren't inspirational at all.

#WIPWednesday

My #knitting project of the day. Or of these days.

But I'm getting close to finishing it. It's a top down worked short sleeve top and I'm adding a border similar to the one around the neckline / on the sleeves at the bottom of the shirt, 5 or 6 repeats of the lace row.

And one of them is already done.

Next decisions: how to finish the neckline and whether I need a finish around sleeve ends.

Call me crazy.

This is the beginning of a long cardigan (about mid thigh), needle size 2.75 mm, gauge 26 sts/10 cm, yarn is 500 m / 100g pure linen.

So all the fun things in one neat package.

And I'm loving it so far.

Ever wanted to see industrial production of a knit sweater?

The process seems very involved so I don't think it's the really cheap, crappy clothes they make there. The details looks careful done.

I thought it rather interesting

- favorite spin/process/ weight

My most used yarn weight is light fingering to sport. Even for garments I usually prefer thin yarns, as they result in more versatile products. A fine cardigan is a year round garment.

Though when I spin my default is mostly lace - I really have to concentrate to get anything thicker.

And now - for something completely different.

I'm a German native speaker, but for about 25 years I read books in English, if that's the original language.

So far I've mostly stuck to "modern" books - but now I took on "Pride and Predjudice". Oh my, English has certainly changed a lot in the last 200 years. (Not that I should be surprised, reading German literature from 200 years ago is also difficult).

I've more of Austen's books, but I think I need a break.

finished, ends woven in.

Off to washing and blocking (which is laying it out to dry and pulling it into shape).

I tried it on and I'm pleased with the overall look. The bottom hem is rolling up slightly, but I'm confident the washing will take care of it.

The sleeve hems are rolling to the inside. I wasn't sure at first about it, but after tying it on I like it that way.

Yarn is Holst Garn Coast in the Marlin colorway.

#Yarnuary: who inspires you in the fiberart world?

After thinking about this for some time: there really aren't people in looking for inspiration consistently. There is so much inspiration out there I find myself finding new sources all the time.

I get inspiration from pictures, little details, color combinations, stitch patterns, questions that get asked somewhere.

Really it's everywhere - here in the fediverse, on ravelry, on Pinterest, places where clothes or textiles appear.

I haven't mended socks in 30 (?) years or so.

One reason was, that usually when holes started to appear it usually was the complete sole that started to disintegrate and after 10 or so years the yarn started to get brittle. The other one was, that I really hated doing it the way my grandma taught me.

Then a few years ago holes started to appear much earlier and mostly at the ball of the foot. Often after only two years.

The yarn is still in great shape so mending started like a sensible thing to do.

But I still struggled with tension and keeping things from moving around while working on the mend.

I then got a speedweve type of mending tool and this changed everything. I'm mostly only using the wood plate with rubber band to fixate the problem zone and pull everything nice and even before starting the mend.

I can now concentrate on the actual work without having to try to keep things straight and even.

    I recommend them as well.

Bonus: some of the sizes come also in glass and one or two even in stainless steel.

There are also different lids - the clip ones, ones in bamboo and a third option of silicone.

And everything goes on everything. I love to use the glass ones for freezing lasagna that I then can just put in the oven to finish it. Or to store cheese and cold cuts in the fridge with bamboo lids - perfect for serving at the table.

I've started about 10 years ago
