"The results were striking: compared to staff wearing surgical masks and not screening patients on admission, the combination of wearing N95 masks and testing patients using RATs was the cheapest, saving an estimated $78.4 million and preventing 1,543 deaths statewide per year. Staff wearing N95s and screening patients with PCR tests was the most effective option, saving $62.6 million and preventing 1,684 deaths per year."

This is an eye-opener! We can thank a man named Prabhakar Raghavan for killing both Yahoo Search and Google Search, while somehow managing to maintain his anonymity - until now.

Musk and Zuckerberg are names we know so well for destroying our experience of the Internet, and here's another name to curse.

Also, I just learnt where the current CEO of Google came from and hoooooly shit.

@Mojeek This actually explains a lot about why the US government doesn't do more about Zucks and the like. They are hungry for data and surveillance. 😕

Just in case you had any doubt whether Musk is a complete slimeball, read about a lawsuit deposition that he tried to suppress from public view:

“But if you’re suggesting that in order to reply to anyone, you have to scroll through all their posts, that would make it impossible to use the system,” he said of his website.

😂

Yeah... if only you hadn't tried to monetize Twitter's means of verifying identities.

I de-activated my Twitter account today. I had decided to keep it without posting a while back, just in case anyone would try to use my handle to write weird stuff and impersonate me, but I realized there’s no way I’m ever going back to Twitter and posting anything there.

If someone impersonates me, well, since Twitter has become so ridiculous and toxic, I’m sure people will accept that it’s not me talking.

I wasn’t using this account, and hadn’t for something like a year, so, bye « X »!

GwynHannay,
@GwynHannay@mastodon.social avatar

@thelinuxEXP This is pretty much my feeling for anyone keeping their account active for that reason. X is not a place where good people should be posting. It's time to let go. ❤️

@ChopsieMurphy @cooopsspace @DenisCOVIDinfoguy @auscovid19 One of my friends was bed ridden following the Swine flu. I saw from a distance (her in the US, me in Aus) as she struggled for years. It sounds so scary.

Some time after that I learnt that it can happen with any virus, so as soon as COVID started circulating I was like, "Nope! Not risking that!"

FFS, this guy is already so out of date. Also:

"...we are seeing little data to demonstrate that the illness they cause is any more severe."

That's because there is no data! BA.2.86 is looking to be more deadly than XBB.1.5, and it's circulating the way COVID did at the very beginning: unseen.

@auscovid19

Even if you are up to date with your shots, you can and will still get COVID. You will then also pass it on to others and increase its opportunity to mutate into a more deadly strain.

If you don't consider yourself at risk of severe disease, good for you. But when you go out without a mask, you're also opening up everyone you see to infection or reinfection. Maybe they aren't so lucky. Or maybe their loved ones aren't so lucky.

Vaccines don't remove the need for masking.

@Hawkwinter @DenisCOVIDinfoguy @auscovid19 I think in the early days there were some scary scans and pictures comparing brains of those who were infected with non-infected. Not surprising given one of the symptoms is lack of smell/taste, which is a brain thing. 😕

Right now if you search for "country in Africa that starts with the letter K":

  • DuckDuckGo will link to an alphabetical list of countries in Africa which includes Kenya.

  • Google, as the first hit, links to a ChatGPT transcript where it claims that there are none, and summarizes to say the same.

This is because ChatGPT at some point ingested this popular joke:

"There are no countries in Africa that start with K."
"What about Kenya?"
"Kenya suck deez nuts?"

Google Search is over.

If anyone is wondering how google is doing, it is giving incorrect answers to the query “How old is the Universe?”

Instead of serving up scientific consensus (just shy of 14 billion years) it is latching onto recent media coverage of a questionable study (tired light, time-dependent coupling constants) claiming a much larger figure.

Notably, it gives me the right answer from an incognito window. But elevating popularity metrics over scientific consensus is a real problem!

GwynHannay,
@GwynHannay@mastodon.social avatar

@mcnees I've been more and more aware lately of how useless Google is as a search engine, but it's so damn hard to change the habit of it being the default. 😛

Doesn't help that it's on all my smart speakers... Now I'm wondering how accurate Google Assistant's answers are. 🙁
