Two days of great weather and then the haar rolled in. Daily watched it approach early evening from the sea, almost - but not quite - like something from a John Carpenter movie…

A quiet beach for Daily , where it has finally decided to warm up.

Bank holiday today, so Daily is staying at home (lots of visitors around; unbelievably terrible driving, narrow roads) and contemplating the garden. The Melianthus major is flowering, so it qualifies as a - and an example of what happens if you don’t cut a Melianthus back. Good!

We didn’t have local ejections (oops) in on Thursday, but we did have PCC elections. We have four police and crime commissioners in the country; three are Labour, one is Plaid; two are women and two are men. And one of the women is the first black female PCC in the UK. Ever.

Daily today is the result of a beach crawl (much the same as a pub crawl but with added sand). It’s addictive - once you’ve got your eye in & spotted the first cowrie lurking, you just have to continue…

(Arctic and Spotted Cowries, Flat Periwinkles, a very worn Pelican’s Foot Shell - but mostly cowries)

Re England’s local elections and some people planning not to vote:

Some years ago, a black friend was living in the north of England (Burnley). There were local elections and I asked him about voting; he said he wasn’t going to bother as he was very busy and they were ‘only local elections’. The next day he had a BNP councillor - and was kicking himself.

If you don’t vote, you are effectively handing your vote to someone else.

Daily today comes with an added reminder to a) vote, if you are somewhere with local/PCC elections today and b) remember your photo ID (thanks, Tories, in an attempt to restrict voting by solving a problem that didn’t exist). Also an exhortation not to vote for anything wearing a blue rosette.

Haven’t got an appropriately angry pic, so let’s have an unrelated one. Here’s my garden helper (infinitely more useful than any Tory politician).

Happy May from Daily - with a first of the month pic from 2021. When the sun shone and it was warm enough to be on the beach for the early morning walk with Not My Labrador without wearing 85 layers of clothing. Hrrrumpf.

@fkamiah17 It’s an odd season, that’s for sure. First of May & I’m still walking in the woods in a polo neck sweater and winter weight jacket

Daily is flying the flag for the start of the week (and please let the fecking Tories get a fecking bashing in the local elections on Thursday, not that they apply to us here - but let them be hammered in their heartlands).

Daily #Wales, #SilentSunday in the meadow

Daily #Wales this weekend should be coming from an extraordinary event, Wonderwool Wales, except I’m not going this year. So here are a couple of pics from previous years (yes, there are sheep as well as LOTS of wool)… and no, it’s not cruel. These are some of the most pampered and loved sheep ever.

A couple of pens with long-wool sheep; some fleeces in the background and a display of yarn made with their wool in the background.

KateCelyn,
@KateCelyn@mastodon.social avatar

I had a, um, discussion with a visitor yesterday who clearly thought that shearing a sheep killed it. She probably still thinks that - left shaking her head, as though I was sadly indoctrinated.

(Probably also believes London is a no-go zone or that being English is virtually illegal, two pieces of similar idiocy I’ve seen recently)

Break from the bluebells for today’s Daily as it’s Friday and therefore . Castell Harlech making a contribution with a window useful if you wish to pour boiling oil on beseigers (please can we reenact with Tory MPs as targets?)

Daily is back in the woods - because it’s bluebell season. Yet again, we need smellovision, because the scent of all the flowers is stunning. Sigh.

Daily with a random pick this morning …

Before the much needed Porthmadog bypass opened in 2011 - diolch, EU funding - there was a ‘walk the bypass’ day. Parking areas at each end, shuttle buses, hog roasts etc: a day for locals to do things they’d never be able to do again, such as walk their dogs on it or cycle three abreast. It has made an enormous and positive difference to Port. So here are people walking (and cycling) the bypass, 25 September. I said it was random!

Daily today is a - gorse in the background, blackthorn in the foreground. Every autumn I come up here to pick sloes from the blackthorns for sloe gin. Must decant last year’s production…

I wish there was smellovision - the gorse is astonishing, a coconut overload. As though the trees had smeared themselves in suntan lotion.

@fkamiah17 Oooooooooo

I did damson vodka one year (well, the little wild plums common round here, eirin bach) and it was FAB. Thank you for reminding me about using vodka instead 👍

Daily today is a bit urban. Well, as urban as we get round here - welcome to Barmouth. Oh yes it is…

(Seriously, too many visitors miss exploring the area known as ‘the rock’, which might delight friends who live there, but IMO is a bit of a shame. It’s a labyrinth worthy of a Mediterranean hill town … er, I might have had too much coffee.)
