Weird that one only hears about a train derailment when looking for a reason why a package is late. Looks like this was only local news.

    Because of extremely dry weather recently, people are asked not to hold any Wicker Man celebrations or any other observances involving bonfires.

    We wish you a safe and happy May 1 and hope this does not overly inconvenience people.

    For those who wish to post a religious objection, please visit the council website and refer your comment to the "Beltane suspenders policy".

    Okay 20% of repos is...high.

    Our research reveals that nearly 20% of these public repositories (almost three million repositories!) actually hosted malicious content. The content ranged from simple spam that promotes pirated content, to extremely malicious entities such as malware and phishing sites, uploaded by automatically generated accounts.

    Cached US Kindle giveaway: 10 copies of Silver Nitrate by Silvia Moreno-Garcia, which I have but have not read. And I keep thinking it's a werewolf book, but that's only because of the title. If you read it, please let me know what you think!

    In the meanwhile, feel free to claim one, or tell other people about the giveaway, or both! Or neither, I mean, that is entirely up to you.

    The world is awful right now, and people are stressed, so see if you can't do something kind for someone.

    If you're about to get fucked over by the Republican-run House, not for any of the usual reasons like being a woman or non-white or caring about the environment, but because your internet bills are about to get jacked up,

    • Get on Lifeline
    • Call your Representative
    • File an FCC complaint (link in article)
    • Vote in November
    • Support your neighbors who are also fucked

    I think the new government windmill I should tilt at is outsourcing project management organizations (PMOs) for tech projects.

    Agencies will do anything to avoid actually having any control or oversight over their most important work. Hired a vendor for $100 million to overhaul mission-critical software? Might as well hire another vendor for $20 million to manage the project. Who in government has the job of actually making sure that $120 million is well spent? Nobody!

    @lilithsaintcrow I made a failed attempt to become a New York City teaching fellow, and was shocked to learn that in 2006 segregation of public schools had declined during the Reagan administration and had already reversed to the levels that required busing in the early 70s. Apparently my time in high school, with barely 5% of my graduating class POC, was peak desegregation.

    Everyone is talking about fast fashion, but no one is talking about the plague of fast furniture. It’s impossible to find true durable pieces that can last for generations anymore, even the so-called “Amish made” pieces are typically cheap stuff being bulk produced in one of a dozen massive factories.

    I can’t even find a solid wood panel bed at any of the vintage or resale shops anymore. Particleboard is the only choice we’re being given. It’s tragic.

    LinuxAndYarn, (edited )
    @LinuxAndYarn@mastodon.social avatar

    @mttaggart @irenes @krusynth I'm also thinking that the prevalence of particle board and MDF has parallels to a discussion from last week about Sears kit homes and how the plans and lumber could be delivered all across the country 100 years ago.

    We simply don't have that much lumber to cut anymore. Nearly the old growth forests outside of national parks are gone, replaced by faster growing softwoods and thinner trees that don't yield big planks for cabinet sides and table tops.

    Help me out mastodon hive-mind... what's the name of the "law" to effect that large organizations shift focus over time from their original aim, instead concentrating on self-preservation and self-promotion?

    I couldn't see it here, but I may have missed it:
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_eponymous_laws

    LinuxAndYarn,
    @LinuxAndYarn@mastodon.social avatar

    @sundew I don't know if it's official, but I've heard it referred to as the "March of Dimes Law." They were founded specifically as an organization to find a cure for polio, and then after the Salk and Sabin vaccines were approved they pivoted to combat all birth defects (a purpose that is vague and impossible enough to guarantee a need for them until the end of the human species).
