Periodic reminder that hate, greed, violence, and bigotry are not "human nature."

They are conditioned behaviors that are amplified by kyriarchy.

Oppression is not a given, and it is not inevitable. Stop giving oppressors a free pass for their choices.

LinuxAndYarn,
@LinuxAndYarn@mastodon.social avatar

@mordremoth

Wow. Kyriarchy was coined thirty years ago by Elisabeth Schüssler Fiorenza and only just now entered my lexicon (because I haven't paid attention to Catholic discourse in close to forty). Thank you for catching me up.

"interconnected, interacting, and self-extending systems of domination and submission, in which a single individual might be oppressed in some relationships and privileged in others"

During the height of COVID, rental assistance, job assistance, food assistance and more were given to those in need. Student loan payments were paused. The US did not collapse due to these policies. In fact, consumer spending went up.

So, given that these things are possible and even economically favorable, one can only conclude that ending them benefits some small but powerful portion of the populace who wants to keep the rest of us under control and in relative, if not full-on, poverty.

There's a bad article that says that companies shouldn't hire DEI consultants, that they should give the money to the poor instead. I won't link to the article, because it's exactly what one would expect, and they don't deserve the hate-clicks.

There's massive blowback against DEI consultants getting paid, because many of the most effective ones happen to be some intersection of Black, women, LGBTQIA.

Give money to the poor! (Unless it means giving them a job with a decent paycheck, especially as a DEI consultant.)

Saw this the other day and honestly it makes me really hopeful for the long term treatment and possibly prevention in MS, at least in conjunction with mRNA vaccines. Probably other virus-triggered autoimmune diseases too.

The finding here is that parts of the Epstein-Barr virus are reasonably close in sequence and shape to proteins in the myelin sheathing around nerves. For at least some people, when they get EBV their immune system decides those bits of the virus are what identifies it, generates antibodies, and then whoops eats your nerves while it's at it. And since it never fully clears out your nerves then your immune system keeps on producing those antibodies.

I just read about the backstory for the .zip and .mov TLDs and Google's thinking seems totally orthogonal to reality:

Google marketers say the aim is to designate “tying things together or moving really fast” and “moving pictures and whatever moves you,”

.mov is a movie, and .zip is an archive, and no amount of Google marketing can change that. Moreover, yes, black holing these domains sounds like a good idea.

Former Philadelphia Inquirer Building, Philadelphia.

Image made during the liminal period between the Inquirer slipping out and the Philly police colonizing it as their headquarters. Purpose-built office buildings are like the shells of hermit crabs, but for organizations.

12 years ago the Inquirer downsized their offices into one floor of an old department store in order to sell the beautiful building they'd been in for ~90 years.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inquirer_Building

The police were supposed to move into an old insurance company headquarters but the union decided they didn't want their members parking in a neighborhood that was extra-heavily policed, and pressured the department to back out of the deal. So then the Inky building became a possibility.

I keep thinking back to this Microlino at Fully Charged Live. Reusable water bottles became acceptable, being vegan is now cool, and so is wearing vintage clothes. So who is going to step up to the critical task of making small cars fashionable? The trend towards giant SUVs is ludicrous, incredibly wasteful and dangerous, and bad for our cities. If you must use a car, it should be as small as possible. Where are the micro-car visionaries/influencers? WE NEED YOU.

There are many different sides to the "Dave Debate"

Should people named Dave exist? Should they have rights? Are they people at all?

I'm not anti-Dave, in fact I am a great supporter of Daves. I just think we need to ask some questions. But if you ask these questions people get so mad.

Shouldn't we at least have a sober reasonable discussion? What's wrong with that?
