Sigh

Listen carefully. You can deplore the US healthcare system without thinking that hospitals getting ransomwared are getting what they deserve.

No patient deserves to be put in jeopardy because of price gouging from pharma, insurers, etc.

Fun fact: "The Tragedy Of the Commons" is a hoax created by the white nationalist Garrett Hardin to justify stealing land from colonized people and moving it from collective ownership, "rescuing" it from the inevitable tragedy by putting it in the hands of a private owner, who will care for it properly, thanks to "rational self-interest":

Thinking about slow work, of which all justice work is a part, in a world that wants you to feel worthless for it. Thinking about how I got off a plane in time to hug my wife after we saw a picture of snipers on her campus surveilling her students. Thinking about how many backyard bbqs we've had those students over for (rented tables outside, our tiny cottage can't hold them all). Thinking what is the exchange rate of bbqs to guns on campus in the calculus of whether a student feels safe

It's hard maybe impossible to express reality on social media but in the words of Dr. Steven Thrasher (from his book "The Viral Underclass"), "How can we survive in such an underclass, or maybe even shrink its scope, if we don't learn to recognize it and think about it communally?"

The world wants it all to be so invisible. Invisible teachers, invisible systems, our queer household making room for other people's kids' secret thoughts, us cut off from our own stories even, unless we keep trying

I basically blocked a guy yesterday, in real life.

I came back to my car from gathering mussels. And this other guy, fat, walking stick, bucket, big modern pickup - except for the nice vehicle he could have been me from the future, starts braying "are those for me?"

It is his attempt at a joke, a conversation starter. He repeated it 3 times, increasingly louder. I ignored him. Okay Boomer, I don't have to talk to you if I don't want to (I'm 51 by the way).

I know it will be me someday...

It is heartening that the editor of the New York Times is being widely condemned for his indifference to saving democracy. Dan Froomkin's piece today has a sampling of the loathing Joe Kahn unleashed. https://presswatchers.org/2024/05/new-york-times-editor-joe-kahn-says-defending-democracy-is-a-partisan-act-and-he-wont-do-it/

If journalists cared about protecting democracy, they would be campaigning -- yes, in their news pages -- for free and fair elections.

Apparently that's too "partisan" for people whose fetish for balance has led them to help democracy's enemies.

So please read and pass around this piece from @marcelias, someone who cares passionately and is doing his best.

Seems like petitions to remove Aileen Cannon have become a thing. Newsweek reports that over 300K signatures have been gathered.

These may not have any force, but it is something tangible you can do to register your disapproval. Another is to channel this anger into electing Democrats.

Here are four of the petitions to remove Aileen Cannon:

I realize that the Fedi at this point, at least my network, skews pretty anti-religious, and fine. But please realize how much this means to so many people and how much it will mean to people in the future. You don't have to agree with an institution's theology to celebrate people no longer feeling hurt and hated and excluded.

Side rant: You know what's really stupid about "microblogging" the way it evolved under the bird site and continues under many Fedi instances, including @social.coop? I can only post 500 characters of text, which is literally smaller than the minimum file size on most operating systems. But I can post a damn screenshot and put 1500 characters in the alt-text, which even with low res and grayscale is probably 100k.

Just let me write actual text!!!
