New study: Researcher productivity (measured in articles published) correlates with the collection size of their #library.

Note this aside, apart from the main conclusion: "There was a statistically significant negative correlation between the number of articles published and references used in the publications. This suggests that the more faculty are likely to publish, the less they tend to use the references in the publications."

@Alon I agree, that is the "smaller picture". I do think that it is worthwhile to also look at the bigger picture of how food systems are governed, e.g. to understand pressures for cutting labor and production costs, at the expense of workers, the environment, animals, etc.

Today in Labor History December 5, 1928: The Colombian military slaughtered up to 2,000 people in the Banana Massacre. Workers had been on strike against United Fruit Company since November 12. They were participating in a peaceful demonstration, with their wives and children. The Columbian troops set up machine guns on the rooftops near the demonstration and closed off the access streets so no one could escape. The soldiers threw the dead into mass graves or dumped them in the sea. U.S. officials in Colombia had portrayed the workers as communists and subversives and even threatened to invade if the Colombian government didn’t protect United Fruit’s interests. Gabriel García Márquez depicted the massacre in his novel “One Hundred Years of Solitude,” as did Álvaro Cepeda Samudio in his “La Casa Grande.”

United Fruit, which is now called Chiquita, controlled vast quantities of territory in Central America, and the Caribbean, maintained a near monopoly in many of the banana republics in which it operated (e.g., Honduras, Guatemala, Costa Rica). By 1930, it was the largest employer in Central America and the largest land owner. In 1952, the government of Jacobo Arbenz, in Guatemala, began giving away unused land, owned by United Fruit, to landless peasants. In 1954, the CIA deposed the Arbenz government, leading to decades of brutal dictatorship and genocide of Guatemala’s indigenous population. The head of the CIA at that time was former board member of United Fruit, Allen Dulles, who also oversaw the over throw of the democratically elected prime minister of Iran, the Bay of Pigs invasion, and the MK Ultra LSD mind control experiments.

The European Public Health Conference, which is all about equity, diversity & inclusion, does (once again) not offer any childcare.

I'd really think that in a registration fee of – believe it or not - 775€ (and that’s the early bird fee!), childcare could be included.

(I personally will gladly leave my kids at home. But it’d be important for those who don't have that option.)

If you’re going to the European Conference this coming November, please write to them and ask for childcare services (even if not relevant 4U).
Offering childcare would be one small thing EUPHA could do to make this conference a bit more inclusive.

Does low accessibility of ambulatory care drive high utilization of emergency care among asylum-seekers?

We examined this question by analyzing interrelations between physical, chronic and mental health needs and utilization of ambulatory and emergency care, while explicitly addressing associations between the different types of care.

We found no evidence that low utilization of ambulatory care contributes to emergency care use; neither did we find evidence that ambulatory treatment obviates the need to seek emergency care. Our results indicate differences in asylum-seekers’ healthcare seeking for different health needs:
Physical healthcare needs and anxiety are associated with higher utilization of ambulatory AND emergency care (“at random”); whereas asylum-seekers with depressive symptoms tend to not seek any services.

Both the undirected and under-utilization of health services reflect navigation and accessibility issues. Support services such as interpretation and care navigation as well as outreach are therefore warranted.

@Sherifazuhur @libya I'm glad that the Guardian reports on this - but it's anything but new. Trafficking for ransom has been discovered as a profitable business in the area for > a decade. And the sealing off of European borders/blocking of secure migration routes has been playing a central role in this.
