had to use the internet without ublock origin for like five minutes the other day and was horrified about what an ad-infested shithole it is, i can't believe regular people just live like this, it's like some horrible dystopian parallel universe
The Affinity suite under #Bottles / Wine is still plagued with issues, unfortunately, so it’s dual-boot for me.
Software development isn’t cheap, and I imagine that there just aren’t enough Linux users to justify the expense of a port. I would gladly pay for a #Linux version, but that’s just me.
Well this is great. Google is now attempting to use generative AI to answer my search queries, and the results are pretty much as awful as you might expect.
WaylandEnable=false is not a file.
sudo/root isn't a privilege level.
I'm not using GDM.
You do not need to reboot for this solution to work, I don't think.
I'd rather get my info from websites, not from whatever a machine drums up.
Wayland is not a replacement for X11. It's an alternative to it with different goals and features.
I have never before heard that Wayland is supposed to be faster than X11. I've seen benchmarks that it's slower in some use cases though.
There's no button that I can see to turn off the Generative AI feature (and I checked multiple places).
I am once again getting the urge to install EndeavorOS but I... only use it to run firefox on it.
Seriously, this is the biggest reason I stopped using Linux; I don't actually use it for anything but browsing the web since gaming just is so much more convinient on Windows and I'm not into Linux for ideological reasons (yet).
I ALSO stopped because the number of bat shit racist libertarians on Linux forums I frequented were souring the experience. But that's another matter.
@WhyNotZoidberg It took me over 20 years to finally make the switch to Linux, and a LOT of that was from the hostile user groups and forums where people treated Linux like a members-only club and pushed new users away with phrases like “RTFM.”
Thankfully, things have changed for the better, and while I still encounter the occasional curmudgeon, the people I encounter nowadays are usually friendly and willing to help.
@s31bz@frameworkcomputer Keeping computers in service keeps them out of landfills - yet another reason to switch to Linux! And who would say “no” to a free ThinkPad?
A #FrameworkLaptop is in my future - can’t afford it just yet, but it’s definitely the laptop I’ve decided to go with.
I cannot logically discuss Israel/Gaza with people who believe this atrocity began with Hamas war crimes on 10/7.
If you ignore a 60 year illegal military occupation, 700K illegal settlements, a two decade blockade, 7000 Palestinians indefinitely detained in Israeli prison w/o charge, 800 Palestinian children indefinitely detained in Israeli prison w/o charge & denied access to counsel or parents, & at least 240 Palestinians killed by IDF from 1/1-10/6/23—then you are not engaging in good faith
@AmishSuperModel I remember climbing into the back of the station wagon with my childhood friend and his sister and watching “Buck Rogers in the 25th Century,” way back in 1979. The movie was mediocre, the sound was terrible, but the experience is one I’ll never forget.
Okay, this is a question for #Linux desktop enthusiasts out there. I'm getting real tired of the spotty fractional scaling in GNOME so I'm looking to replace it with #KDE. What are some themes/ways you've managed to make your desktop look beautiful?
@nshki Give the hashtag #ShareYourDesktop a follow if you haven’t already.
I have also recently switched from GNOME to KDE, and as a macOS refugee, I like the top panel with bottom dock layout. Boring, but functional. I posted a few of my desktops with that hashtag. I’m a Star Wars nerd, so all of mine are leaning in that direction.
@cdfinder Agreed. While the thinness is indeed marvelous mechanical engineering, that’s not going to make me want to upgrade. Odd that they led with that instead of their new M4.
