What do you think of this painting?

TheCoolest,

@Mrfunkedude I think it's creative how the colours aren't blended close-up, instead they occasionally appear to overlap, and chamge frequency/density in different parts of the canvas. It's a nice choice of colours too. Doesn't really convey meaning but it does have a relaxed vibe to it, and is stylistically interesting in how it's not a smooth gradient blend, it's got character, but it still feels smooth enough.

took me until the last leg of my trip but I finally had the life experience of getting chased by a rabid dog in India

thank fuck I can run fast

when someone says "BRB" it means they're really hungry and so they're asking you to Be aRBys so that you can serve them food. I know my way around the cyberspace.

TheCoolest,

@RickiTarr I have even further questions

TheCoolest, to random

in what kind of world would your lightbulbs threaten to stop working until you hand over your email address

haha this kind of world

TheCoolest,

@vsp yeah though many of those had the implication that they "required" accounts from the get-go

Philips Hue never required an account until now, and now they're trying to force it on all existing customers.

And I used to say smart light bulbs were the only commercial smart home tech I actually liked. Maybe in a few years I'll be making my own from scratch.

6 hours left and I’ll have completed an entire day without being accused of some crazy fedi-conspiracy 🎉

TheCoolest,

@jerry Oh damn now I need to think of a conspiracy

Uhhhh

Secretly you are an actual alpaca, and you just assumed nobody would notice. Well I'm not blind to it, I see that profile picture. I see through the lies spewed from that face on that big, fluffy long neck. You can't fool me. That's no human face, you're an alpaca.

Ah yes, advertising blackouts in -30c where it maybe gets there 2-3 times a year and - it gets better - over half their energy is produced by nuclear.

Alberta’s tax dollars doing some real heavy lifting here. 🫠

TheCoolest,

@kevinlovestech @chad they do because they know they couldn't be taken seriously if they didn't

the tactic is to delay. Say that it's happening too fast, and needs to wait until further in the future. When we get further in the future, they'll say once again that it's happening too fast and needs to wait until further in the future. They spin doing anything at all as going too fast, that's what the moratorium's about.

It's not like I didn't know full well that it was gonna happen, but boy howdy is saying any nice thing about Large Internet Company on Mastodon quite the exercise.

I'm just another noodle on the internet - what do I know?

But perhaps if any mention of a mainstream anything invites You're Doing it Wrong and you Should Feel Bad About Your Opinions as responses by default... maybe this place isn't so fun.

TheCoolest,

@TechConnectify This place does have its fair share of FOSS evangelist snobbery. I wish I could pretend I haven't contributed to it.

I don't get why some people didn't seem to expect a YouTuber to generally favour YouTube though. That's just... that's on them.

And fwiw, I actually also agree in paying creators directly as a way to support a business model without ads. I just don't trust the revenue split. Used to pay for premium, then patreon, then realized oop there's an affordability crisis

TheCoolest,

@TechConnectify I'd say I'm referring more to distrusting how much Google themselves take to grow into an even bigger company.

Even though paying them removes ads, Google is arguably the world's largest ad company, and part of me wonders how much of that money spent on removing ads for me goes toward expanding their ad business elsewhere. Maybe that's nonsense. I don't know.

In any case I'll probably start contributing to your patreon again once I can afford to not live with my parents 👍

There are kids at the library who are making swords out of paper, passing them to me, and telling me to hand them to "all children"

TheCoolest,

kid: "we are making swords so that when children come you give them swords"

TheCoolest,

The kid later asked me for a stick to hold up a paper halloween mask on

I said "I don't think we have any of those" (didn't go looking)

I went into the back for a supplies restock, the kid was waiting for me at the workroom door, said "did you find any brown sticks?"

me: "No but I have some tape, paperclips, and rubber bands"

kid: "That's OK you did great"

TheCoolest,

I handed him a paperclip and he proceded to try to lockpick the washroom

Hi what do I need to do to get my country to take action on climate change?

TheCoolest,

@Valkyrie

  • find activist groups and protests near you, join them, donate to them, etc.
  • call and email your government representatives (all levels of government)
  • sign petitions
  • look for government meetings which are open for public speakers. Doesn't have to be federal, municipal still makes a big difference

I could also speak about various types of activist organizations, there's quite a variety in who they target and how

What I need is a browser plugin which detects when you're looking at a YouTube video which also has a copy on Nebula and offers to redirect you.

TheCoolest,

@mcc I use this extension which alleviates at least some of those things: https://github.com/cpiber/NebulaEnhance

I also went through my YouTube subscriptions one by one to subscribe to them on Nebula when they happen to be on both platforms, and then when bookmarking Nebula, I have the bookmark linking specifically to the library filtered by original/plus/first only

How To Be Nice Online

I'm going to preface this by saying Human Rights are not a subject of debate, period, if you disagree, go ahead a block me, you aren't gonna like my account.

  1. Stay out of the comments of posts about personal beliefs and ideas, unless a question is involved. There are many people on Mastodon with different belief systems, there are also many people who get triggered by Religion or things like Astrology. Both of these things are valid! Remember your experiences aren't the same as others. It is better to make your own post than berate someone's personal beliefs or to try push your personal beliefs on someone who doesn't want them. Posting Bible verses in a post about atheism or agnosticism is aggressive and unkind, so is giving someone a lecture about how their beliefs are ruining the world. If you need to vent, this is what your own account is for.

1 1/2. CW posts you know are often inflammatory, your instance usually has a list. Not saying you need to CW everything, but try to make an accurate description and use tact.

  1. Think about tone! Tone is infamously difficult to get across in text. Sometimes it's better to overexplain or send an additional message making sure people understand you are making a joke or being sarcastic.

  2. Make sure what you're reading is the intention of the writer, before you get upset, and go on the defensive. Send a private message and make sure you got it right. I like to assume the best about people first, rather than assuming the worst.

  3. If someone says something you don't like make sure it isn't out of ignorance. I have used wording that other people found questionable or posted something without understanding the full scope. We are human and we make mistakes. As above, approach the person in private with your concerns, I appreciate everyone who has come to me in sincerity and kindness.

  4. If someone does come to you with an issue, don't overreact and go on the offensive. If I'm in my feelings, I will often show it to a trusted friend and ask their honest opinion. It's okay to take a breather and think it out, no one needs your answer or action right away.

  5. It's okay to block or mute, whether it's a whole account or just a word or two, make your experiences and everyone else's the best it can be.

  6. HELP STOP BULLYING AND TROLLS IN THEIR TRACKS! Not just for yourself, but for anyone, if you see something, say something. PLEASE, PLEASE TAKE SCREENSHOTS! I know when your upset it's hard to remember, but bullies and trolls will often delete posts, and just get away with it, because there isn't proof. When you make a report, please make sure you include a reason why you're reporting, and any toots or screenshots you have, and encourage others to report also. Admin can't be everywhere, and don't always understand the situation or what and why you're reporting, be specific and keep receipts, so the administrator can be fair to everyone.

  7. Remember, think twice before posting a comment that is or could be construed as negative. Not everyone needs or wants your opinion. It's totally okay to scroll on past or make your own post on the subject. No one owes you their attention, but kindness and understanding is way more likely to get it than negativity.

TheCoolest,

@RickiTarr Believe me, point 2 is harder than it sounds. I do the best I can, but I'm autistic, I don't pick up on everything. A few days ago, I was trying to provide a helpful suggestion to someone, and was met with a reply saying I was "mansplaining" and an instant block. Two things about that: 1. I don't post my gender on this account. Am I a man? This person certainly thought so. 2. I wasn't even giving an explanation of anything. Imagine how much worse it would have been if I was.

Friends, - ians, lend me your ears 👂

I spoke to a very interesting group of people last week about the prospects for Public Social Media.

I feel I should write a brief essay as followup and I am staring forlornly at my text editor.

How shall I explain to people unfamiliar with the why it represents a promising opportunity for their organizations?

TheCoolest,

@Hey_Beth @gbhnews Small sidenote: Bluesky never had plans to federate with Mastodon. The federation protocol they're developing is incompatible and Mastodon developers have many, many reservations about adding support for it to say the least. At the time of writing, Mastodon only federates on ActivityPub, and Bluesky is still yet to open up to federation on their as-yet-unfinished "AT Protocol". This isn't to say it will never happen, but... yeah.

malwaretech, to random

I keep seeing this get reposted and I can't tell if people are trolling for engagements or if everyone is just completely financially illiterate. If you get any answer other than $400, you need to go back to school.

TheCoolest,

@malwaretech @thepacketrat I've got a hunch dyscalculia is very, very underdiagosed. Heck, I have nearly all of the symptoms and no diagnosis. I probably would have answered 500 if the answer hadn't been given to me, because I wouldn't have thought to subtract the gap between the initial sale price and the second purchase price.

Private
TheCoolest,

@ScruffyDux @actuallyautistic I don't have any answers but I will say that, from trying to look into similar things in the past, it seems the cause-effect relationship of anything non-neurological associated with autism is muddied, because people still don't know any solid causes for autism (except that in many cases it's clearly genetic, but, which genes).

Tl;dr hypotonia might not even be caused by autism, it might even sometimes be part of a cause for autism, or both might even share causes.
