Someone should fork activerecord. It is extremely beginner friendly, but not maintained very well and too coupled to Rails. Sequel is too low-level and doesn't provide that nice model based interface. ROM is more tailored for expert developers who prefer the Repository Pattern and the Sequel query API.

Ruby need a standalone beginner friendly ORM.

acute_distress,

@postmodern what makes you say ActiveRecord isn’t maintained wry well?

acute_distress,

@postmodern you hit the nail on the head. ActiveRecord isn’t for you and me, it’s for Rails and by extension Basecamp. If it doesn’t benefit Basecamp then ¯_(ツ)_/¯

I used to experience teleopsia (everything appearing far away) somewhat regularly when I was younger.

Last night I experienced it again while going to bed, and my brain decided I then had to google to see if it had a name and other people experienced it.

Turns out there is something called Alice in Wonderland Syndrome https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/diseases/24491-alice-in-wonderland-syndrome-aiws

acute_distress,

@j I used to experience it in my early teens. I too recently learned it's a thing.

I’ve heard some stories about Software AG and they sound like a pack of arseholes. I’d drop them like a stone if they were one of my vendors.

As more mainstream media open accounts here on Mastodon, try to follow them. As they build up audiences here, it will make it easier for them to abandon that Xhit site over there.

Does anyone have a list of good media accounts here?

@billbennett it would be nice if you linked to the users profile

How did Apple screw up screen savers this time?

Well! In macOS 14.0, it calls startAnimation, but never calls stopAnimation, or kills the process.

So once a screen saver has launched, it just keeps running forever in the background on a now-invisible window. A top-level window with both 'visible' and 'onActiveSpace' being true.

Any ideas how to detect this crazy state?

acute_distress,

@joshjet @jonhendry this is a security problem for people who rely on, or have employers who mandate this to lock their machines.

acute_distress,

@joshjet @jonhendry ok. I have work mates who have been complaining about it. Maybe they have a different problem.

Really good paper by Dr. Emerson Murphy-Hill and friends, about what the Engineers and Managers at Google that have successfully built and sustained inclusive teams, found worked for them.♥️👍🏿

(Related: I love my little hot takes and tweets about inclusion and all, but nothing beats sound, rigorous research to back up all the vibes and typos. Dr. Murphy-Hill is one of the folks that consistently produces good work that makes the whole industry better. Read his stuff.)

This is currently going 'viral' on Bluesky. An Asian woman suffered racist abuse in a Wellington supermarket a few hours ago. She has reported it to the Police and to the supermarket, but in case anyone here recognises him.

Booking.com are scum bags. They sell rooms that don’t exist. Now they aren’t paying the hotels. All while having increased profits https://www.theguardian.com/business/2023/oct/01/booking-com-hotel-fees-unpaid-millions-technical-issue

Imagine being on the verge of political power - only because people are 'tired' and want things to go back to 'normal' - and announcing more speed on our roads, and therefore more deaths, all based on the lie that there are widespread speed reductions. Not to mention also announcing more, faster roads. What an appalling vision for Aotearoa.

acute_distress,

@paulhellyer as I said last night they seem to be getting their policy ideas form the comments section of Stuff or talk back radio

peteo, to NewZealand

Lots of talk over the weekend over the problems with National’s proposed tax on overseas house buyers

I've not seen a discussion on whether we *** should *** be selling our best houses to people who don't live here. What is the consequence of selling those houses to effectively become holiday homes, lost to NZ ownership in return for short term revenue gain?

(And strangely, Nicola Willis has ruled out asset sales on her Q&A interview)

acute_distress,

@peteo asset sales? We have no assets left to sell. John Key sold them all.

acute_distress, to NewZealand

National seems to be getting most of their policies ideas from the Stuff comments section.

In Safari,

  • Tabs sprouted tab groups
  • Tab groups sprouted (?) profiles

I can't see what the endgame is. I am looking at a window with a tabgroup tab button and a profile button and open tabs.

acute_distress,

@glennf this is what happens when you run out of ideas and won’t call it done.
