So sad to see friend here in NC having to deal with this.

ABC: "Cutting UNC's DEI funding could have widespread effect on scholarship programs and more" https://abc11.com/post/dei-funding-chopping-block-unc-board-of-trustees-diversity/14826522/

ai6yr,

Very clear, political, and racist statement by the UNC Board of Trustees in this particular choice (IMHO).

...THERE IS A MODERATE RISK OF SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS IN PORTIONS OF KANSAS...

...THERE IS A SLIGHT RISK OF SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS OVER PARTS OF EAST-CENTRAL/SOUTHEASTERN FLORIDA...

An organized swath of severe thunderstorm wind (potential derecho) is expected mainly across parts of Kansas this afternoon and evening, possibly extending into northern Oklahoma. Gusts of 75-100 mph are possible, along with large hail and a few tornadoes.

Please stay weather aware.

ai6yr,

@Copacetic_vibe Well, there's a bullseye again. Yeesh for Kansas.

Remembering today that if I find something very useful online that I need to use again, to save it locally (even if it's bookmarked). Especially in the age of AI slop.

I’ve been in this business, writing software professionally, since I started my first software business at 16 in high school an an Apple ][. That’s 45 fucking years. It would never occur to me to steal other people’s code, let alone their likenesses, voices, or art.

Just eject these thieving “AI” companies into the sun. These people, and the VCs that fund them, are a cancer on the software industry.

The amount of AI-generated crap flooding #YouTube is truly impressive, in the manner of a galaxy-sized landfill.

ai6yr,

@lauren Dang, hadn't hit the stuff I was looking for yet. It has most certainly made DuckDuckGo/Bing almost useless, and Google nearly so (although using before:2022 seems to weed out the Google AI crud, for now)

ai6yr, to books

Borrowed The Lost Cause, written by @pluralistic (from the library), and was an enjoyable sci-fi novel, although perhaps too close for comfort to the present, and most certainly more optimistic than some of us here would be about the future; but, well recommended nonetheless. The hero of the book most certainly would be a denizen of this slice of the Fediverse.

Well, that's not good. That was a pretty handy site from the PNNL (DOE). No longer goes anywhere. Looks like a lot of it is on archive.org... but, still.

ai6yr,

@douglasvb I'm hoping it's just a technical snafu that has disrupted that site. I should have downloaded it all while it was up... in this day and age, a necessity to save useful information before it disappears.

ai6yr,

@douglasvb Thanks! I had internalized most of the site (studying it page by page for good info), but it was a useful place to send people for reference, too.

ai6yr,

@mlanger We shall see. This one is not due to their lack of interconnection, but destruction of their internal transmission lines. This being Texas, they will likely raise the cost of energy for the lowest income consumers as punishment to pay for the damage (the Texas energy system is run by the power producers, who appear to view it as a means to make themselves wealthier, at great cost to the population). If you recall the Texas Freeze: https://www.nbcnews.com/business/business-news/deep-freeze-subsides-texans-now-face-electricity-bills-10-000-n1258362

ai6yr,

From that other site... 😬

ai6yr,

@HumToTable One hopes this is only a temporary glitch in the system, but I would not be surprised if the frequency of this continues to increase.

ai6yr,

@me_valentijn @HumToTable We went from using our A/C once a year when we first moved into this house, to several times a year, to two weeks or so a year, to continuous in the last couple of years in summer--and at least a few times last winter (not this year... yet). And that's with a massive insulation and weatherization overhaul I had embarked on in the last five years.

ai6yr, to california

Interesting, California has a pilot program on an effort to charge drivers by the number of miles you drive, instead of through gas taxes. (to make up for lost revenues to EVs, which do not need gasoline). They are paying $400 in gift cards -- and a gas tax or EV registration fee credit -- for taking part in the pilot. #California #driving #autos #taxes https://caroadcharge.com/media/zehd2y5s/ca-sb-339_public-fact-sheet_final_remediated.pdf

ai6yr,

@darren Well, if you opt into GPS tracking, they do not charge you for those out of state miles. (but... you do have to accept a state agency plugged in your GPS info, for at least a limited time...)

ai6yr, to cycling

Some bozo ran over nearly every cone on the eastbound side of the demonstration bicycle lane here in Thousand Oaks. Must have been more than two dozen cones down. Drunk driver? Someone who doesn't like bicycle lanes? Or someone who has a grudge against cones? (ps. this is why separated, not coned off, lanes are better)

ai6yr,

@me_valentijn Yep, that would fix that problem, for sure.

@SRLevine asks about flat tires:

Q7. How do you define a pinch flat?

I always thought it was having a classic "snakebite" pattern and that other things don't use that term, but the shop I went to this week seems to use it differently (in a more rubbing situation maybe?), so I think my definition is maybe too restrictive.

(Do you have any pinch flat stories?)
