A great piece from @pluralistic : Ostromizing democracy

Come for the robust critique of libertarian antidemocratic assholes, stay for the (well founded) argument that sci-fi, like (ethnographically grounded) empirical analytical social science, gives us richer, more nuanced and compelling material to think and create with.

@scottmatter could not agree more about sci-fi. In fact: https://scifieconomicslab.net @pluralistic

Finished @pluralistic 's "Red Team Blues". I am going to stick my neck out, and claim it is to the 2010s what "Neuromancer" was to the 1980s. Out with cyberpunk cowboys, enter forensic accountants with a TOR browser and a SIgnal account. The insane, criminal billionaires and their minions are still around.

@detritus the crypto references in the book feel more 2010s than 2020s, to me at least. @pluralistic

@waciuk interesting... I need to think about that. @pluralistic

@jacomyma great work! Mathieu, I am having trouble communicating with Anders, it's like my mails to him end in spam. Could you please ask him to get in touch?

I scored ONE POINT!

(I never used Blockbuster. Indeed, I never rented a video. For most of the period when video rentals were a thing, I didn't own a TV, never mind a VCR.)

@cstross but then again, the rest of us pay money to access the content of your head as entertainment! No wonder you can entertain yourself.

I Had Been Unaware of How Many People Are Claiming Chat-GPt5 Will Be "Emergent" & Will "Generalize" & Be Nearly "AGI"

I find that I really cannot believe them. Indeed, I am wondering if how many of them are the same people as those who were the crypto hype-grift artists last year…

Reading @pluralistic 's "Red Team Blues" and the world makes sense again. "Forensic accounting never had a better friend than crypto, with its mix of public ledgers, deluded masters of the universe, and suckers pumping billions into the system. It was full employment for me and my competitors until cryptocurrency’s carbon footprint rendered the earth uninhabitable." :flan_laugh:

@rysiek we at @edgeryders are very fond of Discourse. What does ActivityPub support mean in practice?

alberto_cottica, to random
@alberto_cottica@mastodon.green avatar

This is a deep intuition from @pluralistic : any platform's game is rent extraction ("enshittification"): insert yourself as a middleman in a transaction, then extract money from both sides. 1/3

https://pluralistic.net/2023/04/21/bondage-fees/#doorman-building

alberto_cottica,
@alberto_cottica@mastodon.green avatar

Neoclassical economic theory does not consider this to be a problem, because it assumes perfect markets. In perfect markets, rent extraction is hard: as soon as someone makes some extra profit by intermediating between two transactants, someone else is bound to undercut them, until competition drives the extra profit to zero. 2/4

alberto_cottica,
@alberto_cottica@mastodon.green avatar

Cory @pluralistic, bless him, has several times made the point that the main problem here is not digital per se, but market attrition ("switching costs") kneecapping the mechanisms of competition. And he is right, in point of theory.

However, in practice, I wonder: is the digital economy so lock-in-friendly that it ends up having a net negative effect on market efficiency? Is it the case that "you can have capitalism, digital networks, and efficient markets, pick any two"? #3/end

alberto_cottica,
@alberto_cottica@mastodon.green avatar

@rysiek actually @pluralistic has a story about that: "Unauthorized bread", in the collection "Radicalized". 😂

@edde though, as it turns out, it does have the power to stop science-based decision making. So better invest in good explanations.
