@apicultor@hachyderm.io

In a sense, I am a beekeeper, hence the username.

I work in the rail industry trying to secure all the things: tons of legacy infrastructure which is now being networked.

Never forget: there is no cloud, there is only other people's computers.

I break shit for fun. Sometimes I even fix it afterwards!

They say that "life is what happens while we're busy making other plans", and they're right; tot i que la vida m'ha allunyat de Catalunya, tinc moltes ganes de tornar a casa.

    @mattblaze It's a wonder the NYC subway works at all. MTA has chronically underfunded maintenance for decades and it is really falling apart, including safety-critical aspects like signalling and interlocking.

    @jon Well they better get to electrifying those lines because, other than for existing deals, Alstom isn't making diesel gear anymore.

    apicultor,
    @apicultor@hachyderm.io avatar

    @jon Batteries don't get you as far as you think! Next time you're in Nice, hop on a tram on line 2 and watch the bottom-right corner of the driver's HMI and you'll see how quickly the battery charge drops. Thankfully there are APS charging pads at many of the stations, which is a luxury you won't enjoy when converting DMUs to BEMUs without expensive retrofitting of small chunks of catenary at stations along the route.

    apicultor,
    @apicultor@hachyderm.io avatar

    @jon 150 km range, apparently. I cannot imagine the weight of the batteries those FLIRTs are lugging around.

    I guess the flip side of the extra energy used to get all that weight moving is that you get more regen out of it when you slow down.

    Doing more reading, they're aluminum carbody shells (which makes sense), so it's not as simple as gutting a DMU and rebuilding it as with converting a DMU to an EMU.

    vaguely tempted to put a bunch of weird-but-useful electronics facts together as a talk for EMF

    stuff like DC bias derating and how it actually occurs at the physical level, why old tantalum caps went off like fireworks but most modern ones don't, why you can build a PCB design from 1992 with the same parts today and now suddenly it won't work, why sprinkling 100nF caps around doesn't really make sense any more, why ferrite beads made your noise worse, the LDO stuff I stumbled across today, etc

    I got to play Scythe today, with four very smart men.

    I randomly drew the Togawa faction, which moves very slowly (boo) but can walk to the factory (yay).

    This faction also has traps. I usually play a very peaceful game, but I do enjoy the chaos of traps.

    I decided to walk to the factory and set a trap and hunker down until the end.

    I decided which trap to set.

    Here is where the second-guessing occurred.

    Handy work for the weekend done: the 1999 Birdy Red is ready for adventures this year 🙂

    New front wheel
    New rim of rear wheel (and yeah, I rebuilt the wheel)
    New chain guard
    New back tire

    Everything cleaned and tightened up

    Detail of back wheel and stand
    Detail of new front wheel
    Home made luggage rack (that was built in 2022) and new back rim and tire

    Skatebirker trying the same trick repeatedly. It’s down a flight of about 10 concrete steps in a skatepark. A giant crowd of people are all watching all around him. When he finally succeeds, he raises his hands in bliss while a sea of people surround him and lift him up.

    Excellent post by @cks regarding how quickly boxes get probed after having their FQDNs included in a Certificate Transparency log (aka having a TLS certificate issued for them):

    Lively discussion on Hacker News too:

    This is actually why I use only wildcard certificates when possible — not for security by obscurity, but why stick your head out of the trench and call attention to yourself when you don't have to?

    I feel bad that I spent $6 on pre-cut fruit at the grocery store my last trip, but here I am eating fruit for once instead of letting whole fruits just rot in the fridge. :/

    apicultor,
    @apicultor@hachyderm.io avatar

    @TomF @Moosader One day, you should walk into a French grocery store and see just how big the cheese section is and how good (almost all of) it is compared to nearly anything you can find in North America. It will ruin North American "cheese" for you forever.

    And on your way out, stop by a boulangerie and get a "baguette tradition".

    THEN go to a fromager (just like a butcher, but cheese) and you won't even want the cheese from the French grocery store.

    I... I don't even have words.
