I used to post about Unreal but because everything I do is NDA, I now just post doom shit

> Scientists have warned of increased turbulence, particularly “clear air turbulence” which is harder to detect or forecast, as global heating warms air at higher altitudes and makes weather more unpredictable.

What if global warming solves global warming by making it impossible to fly anywhere or have reliable power or shipping? Neat!

I just saw the latest OSX release. Why has their UX gone to shit? There's no contrast or borders around selectable list items, their Display Settings menu is incredibly vague and confusing.

Ok indies (and I'm looking especially at you Death's Door)

look, screen shake is great, but if I'm struggling with a boss because I can't see what's going on, turn off all your FX, and then beat the boss without taking a hit,

That's too much juice, let some of the juice out, be like 20% less juicy

ben,
@ben@m.benui.ca avatar

@glassbottommeg I turn off screen shake and controller rumble immediately when I start a game. It always makes me feel ill

I've got a question - why isn't there an option to turn off Google's "AI Overviews"?

What do they gain from forcing it in everyone and costing themselves a bunch of money generating nonsense every time someone does a search?

ben,
@ben@m.benui.ca avatar

@ghosttie

  • publicity
  • get people used to a feature that they then charge for or use as a USP
  • training data
  • pushing the ai future that they think will make them more money

i had to search what it was you were referring to, sounds amazing they managed to make their own search experience worse

Today I tried what Geometry Script is in Unreal Engine 5. Cool features, but I won't use it for the game. Maybe only as tools for level design

I like how the metaverse didn't happen

Facebook evaporated billions of dollars on it and then just... nothing

Even autocorrect is like "that's not a word"

and generative art

I've been using them for years but if @protonprivacy starts using training AI based on my email I'm closing my account the very same day.

@protonprivacy This is from their most recent user survey. Very tellingly the following question is

"What OpenAI have presented with GPT-4o is a fresh paint job on a car with a dangerously corroded chassis. A false confidence machine."

https://phanpy.social is a pretty incredible Mastodon client. Entirely web based, looks great on mobile and desktop, you can configure your shortcuts that appear above or below the river of news.

Some screenshots from my own account: good notifications page, different kinds of toots get a different status, plus Boosts are shown in their own carousel.

I've heard one developer made all this, it's pretty incredible.

Boosts are rolled up into a carousel of toots you can view with sideways scrolling
Threads are shown grouped together and single posts from threads are indicated as such.

Since moving to my own instance I get the impression that Mastodon is a lot quieter. I wonder if people I'm following aren't getting their stuff federated to my instance? I'm just on the cheapest masto host level

Jeez, this is Unreal Engine 5's 9-slicing implementation?? This is so awful, good god. I didn't think you could screw this up...

ben,
@ben@m.benui.ca avatar

@brody @glassbottommeg if there's a desired behavior maybe we could make a PR for the engine? a new drawing style?

Beware the positivity of early adopters.

People who sign up for your beta or buy your game in early access are way more likely to forgive problems than people who buy the game on 50% sale. If early adopters mention a "small problem", take it seriously.

Stack Overflow announced that they are partnering with OpenAI, so I tried to delete my highest-rated answers.

Stack Overflow does not let you delete questions that have accepted answers and many upvotes because it would remove knowledge from the community.

So instead I changed my highest-rated answers to a protest message.

Within an hour mods had changed the questions back and suspended my account for 7 days.

Diff view of a stack overflow question showing it being changed from the original text to a protest message, then being changed back again by a mod. Protest text reads: Why does OpenAI get to profit from our work? I have removed this question in protest of Stack Overflow's decision to partner with OpenAI. This move steals the labour of everyone who contributed to Stack Overflow with no way to opt-out. OpenAI has a history of flooding the web with inaccurate information and have explicitly stated that they will never pay creators for their work.

@ben@m.benui.ca avatar

It's just a reminder that anything you post on any of these platforms can and will be used for profit. It's just a matter of time until all your messages on Discord, Twitter etc. are scraped, fed into a model and sold back to you.

Also that CC claims that training an AI on data is "fair use". So fuck Creative Commons I guess.
