My first computer was a C128, and everything has been downhill since.

Interested in retro and modern retro projects.

I know how to code.

Booting a Raspberry Pi from Comically Old Hard Drives

@ActionRetro I was kinda hoping that you’d read what was on those old drives. A cheap way to dump retro computer harddrives wouldn’t be a bad thing.

Also you need one of those insane 15krpm drives. They have the craziest noises:)

@NanoRaptor I missed the sides at first. Nice touch!

Do not understand why people always use bloated third party json libraries and then complain about it when I've seen people using pico 8 create json (de)serializers in like 15 lines of code

breadbin,
@breadbin@bitbang.social avatar

@eniko Do you happen to have that code a link away perhaps? Tried searching and, yeah, no, nope.

Why? Because I’m curious. I think we all who can code should share little code snippets now and then (and I’ve been bad at it) simply because it would make all of us collectively both think and discuss.

And it will help people starting out too I think.

@ActionRetro Makes me wonder if there’s a sweet spot where it’s worth buying Mac Pros to run a few home servers.

Matt Farrah of The Smoking Tire gave an honest and (therefore) devastatingly negative review of the . Good on him. Every point he makes is spot-on (except maybe the chuckle-inducing post-Apocalypse truck argument).

@drahardja I can’t get over how dumb it looks. What kind of artist or industrial designer would come up with that?

None of the previous ones looked that bad.

Me: I’m gonna go change into sweatpants.

Me: I did not work this long and this hard to wear street pants in my own damn house, son.

i wonder why other devs don't seem to localize to (brazilian) portuguese. the 2nd highest country for wishlists for kitsune tails is brazil (7% vs USA 40%), and historically we've had lots of sales from brazil. i get that the price per unit for that region is low but come on that's still a lot of fans you're leaving out in the cold by not localizing your game for them

breadbin,
@breadbin@bitbang.social avatar

@eniko Genuine question, got any idea of if the increased sales would cover the cost of a translation? I feel that even if it’s a wash it means a potentially bigger audience and a translator gets paid.

(Since I prefer English even if my native tongue is supported I genuinely have no clue. And a fair number of people do speak English as well.)

Much as I dislike the theft of human labor that feeds many of the products we see today, I have to agree with @pluralistic that law is the wrong way to address the problem.

To frame the issue concretely: think of whom copyright law has benefited in the past, and then explain how it would benefit the individual creator when it is applied to . (Hint: it won’t.)

Copyright law is already abused and extended to an absurd degree today. It already overreaches. It impoverishes society by putting up barriers to creation and allowing toll-collectors to exist between citizen artists and their audience.

Labor law is likely what we need to lean on. and protect creators in a way that copyright cannot. Inequality and unequal bargaining power that lead to exploitation of artists and workers is what we need to address head-on.

Copyright will not save us.

@drahardja @pluralistic You are right that copyright can’t save us, but I think Pandora’s box is open and we can’t close it again. Whether we want to or not. As pro union/guild that I am (hint: a lot) I see this as loosing battle.

We are seeing the move to post scarcity right now. Art can be copied for virtually no cost at this point. With data breaches almost daily on top of that.

I think taxes and UBI might be the only way. At least it’s the only thing I can come up with myself.
