Gene editing has created a new way to treat sickle-cell disease. This is the start of a new age of medicine. However, there are many hurdles to still overcome: health care inequities, side effects, cost, and how intensive the treatment is.

If aliens ever visited earth and wanted to take it over, they wouldn't need their advanced technology.
Imagine a broadcast from space announcing "I am the second coming of Christ! Swear loyalty to me and obey all instructions from the sky. Anyone who doubts is of the antichrist. Slay them in my name."
Humanity would tear itself apart.

chad,

@thepoliticalcat my point was that there would be a massive number of religious people around the world that would be an instant army under alien control and would attack everyone else - people of other faiths, agnostics, atheists.

chad, to atheism

It bothers me when people think is a religion. I've had people tell me "that's just your belief."
No. It isn't belief. That's the point. Atheism - "non-theism"- is about NOT taking things on "faith," but about accepting whatever the weight of evidence supports.

Republicans: "ok, we're going to cooperate and work together for the betterment of all"
Also Republicans: "ha ha just kidding, we THRIVE on completely derailing government"
Hopefully enough Americans are paying attention to this circus to hurt Republicans in the 2024 elections.

Interesting episode today from "Lost Women of Science" about Elizebeth Smith Friedman, whose career went from studying Shakespeare to establishing codebreaking as a skilled professional whose service was extremely valuable to the US over decades. However, she's largely unknown today - likely to taking military secrets much more seriously than her male colleagues.

This opinion piece from the Guardian makes an excellent point: high quality journalistic sources covering US politics need to focus on truth and context, instead "neutrality" and trying to somehow seem to be balanced in their coverage of the two parties, given that one is actively anti-facts and anti-democracy.

Khan Academy is working on an AI tutor, built on the technology using . The goal is to provide one-on-one, 24/7 tutoring for students, so they can write questions in natural language and be gently guided along to think through problems. It's still early days, but very interesting. Education is badly in need of major innovation.

My new yard sign! Couldn't find a relevant one I liked, so I had a custom one printed through Staples. I'm not thrilled with the design from Fiverr, and it's unfortunate that I had ordered it before Trump's mugshot, but I'm still happy to display it.

: faulty security measures.

Websites that have tight maximum length restrictions, restrict allowed characters, or require them to be changed often.

Blood donor center where I hand over my ID, and then to make sure it's me, ask me for my address- which is on the ID. If I was a fraud, I'd be able to answer that.

Chewy wanting to make sure I'm the one that placed an order - so they ask me what was in the order. Which a fraudster placing the order would know.

I'm more familiar with the term "exvangelical" than "nones," but yes, leaving religion is lonely.
The author wishes there was something exactly like church, just without religion. I sympathize, but disagree. I've visited over 70 churches. An almost complete lack of doctrine is already very common, and the author already mentions Unitarian Universalists and Sunday Assembly.
We don't need church. Liberals need alternative social cohesion. We need community.

Any recommendations on a good anti-Trump yard sign, related to the indictments? Something about keeping politicians accountable would be great. I'm not finding any good ones though.

Thought provoking episode about sex work https://www.pantsuitpoliticsshow.com/show-archives/2023/8/11/lets-talk-about-sex-work
Essentially, legalization is the best protection. The episode makes the case that efforts made to "protect" people tend to punish women who have made their own career choices. As the guest says, you can't protect people while you're hunting them.

Shame on Zoom, who has decided to force their employees to return to the office (on a hybrid schedule).
The irony is extremely thick.
Is it really that their employees are happier and more productive? Or is it more that the executives feel obligated to maintain a large, expensive office space, even though it provides negative value?
MORE companies should fully embrace remote work. Not just this "hybrid" dreck - 100% remote work for all roles that can.

This is wild. The famous "nudge" researchers lied about their studies on honesty.
Their findings could not be replicated. Then experts dug into the data and realized much had been altered to get positive results.
Not only was this a terrible, shameful, harmful thing to do, but it seems pointless. In science, other people need to be able to replicate your results. Fake it, and the truth will come out sooner or later. Sad.
The story aired on the Planet Money podcast.
