Writer and broadcaster of Signal Thirteen Radio. Retired innocent bystander. Cursing is at times a form of art.

I love music, radio and connections. In real life a son, brother, pupper dad and caregiver, writer of oddities, Jockey of Discs.

Bigotry and hatred against LGTBQ2S+ people, and others, will cause me to identify as a massive problem.

Don't hurt people.

chriswho,

@shoq I think the standard pop wisdom is the longer the deliberations then the more doubt and the better for the defiance.

Having said that, this is Twilight Zone stuff. All bets are off.

We are going to learn a lot about the US in the next 2 hours, and a lore more than that in what happens in the next few days.

imho the biggest difference is that if instance1.social decides that hachyderm is a problem I can go to instance2.social that hasn't blocked hachyderm.

The argument isn't that mastodon is free from decisions, but that those decisions don't have a blanket effect on all users and are (usually) fairly easy to get around.

how did I only just learn that the reason Jerry Seinfeld keeps getting headlines lately about cancel culture and being a real man is because he made a movie that's just an ad for pop tarts

chriswho,

@rebeccawatson It's always fascinating to me how many of these millionaire guys are able to complain through print, streaming and talk shows with audiences in the tens of millions that they're getting cancelled and extremely angry and upset about it.

I guess I just must be lucky because I happen to catch every single one of them.

What are the odds, eh?

Look, here's the issue with the sudden zeal Americans have found for social justice that leads them to get their way or decide to burn it down.

I don't for a moment dispute the horror that is going on against the Palestinian people, nor do I want folks to ignore injustice.

America is, however, founded on ignoring injustice, and people do it every day.

There's a genocide going on against black and brown people in America hourly. 1/*

chriswho,

They are systematically murdered at the hands of police, they are incarcerated into the system of slavery that has been going on since the Civil War made it necessary to move slavery out of the daylight and into the shadows.

The alliance young white folks of privilege that was formed with Black Lives Matter lasted about as long as it took for them to feel the price they were going to pay in living standard, job prospect, and risks to their safety.

Women are almost back to the 1930s in terms of their health care options, and all medical trials have rarely not been aimed at men exclusively, and women's health given equal time and resources.

LGTBQ2SIA+ folks are targeted daily and are looking to be the mythical bugaboo that will be used to justify the latest round of fascist pogroms

Asylum seekers are called "evil" and "animals" and refugees are forced to live in the shadows of society, doing the jobs that white folks don't want to do. 3/*

chriswho,
@chriswho@mstdn.social avatar

So, don't get me wrong. It's great that you've discovered a burning white hot fire of justice within you, and I encourage it and ask you to apply it everywhere in your life.

I think it's fantastic that you've chosen to champion the cause of a vulnerable people currently at the mercy of an implacable, immoral, merciless enemy. These people on the other side of the world desperately need the worlds help. 4/*

chriswho,
@chriswho@mstdn.social avatar

I guess I just have to ask why your zeal did not appear when these evils were occurring in your neighborhood right in front of you - when these people were brutalized not by your vote, but by your silence.

I wish you had adopted the philosophy of "stop it or we burn it down" when it would have cost you more, but made your society healthy and much more able to respond to where we are now.

We might not even have ended up here at all

White people, WHY do you send your people into danger to fucking proselytize religion?

https://www.thedailybeast.com/missouri-state-rep-ben-bakers-daughter-son-in-law-killed-in-haiti

They're dead, along with who knows who-all else. If you go into danger, you assume the risk of what will happen. Nobody asked you to go make more Christians someplace else. Stay the fuck home, FFS. Knit. Go for walks. Foster some kittens and puppies.

chriswho,
@chriswho@mstdn.social avatar

@thepoliticalcat I always figured if you really believe your religion is better than I'm sure "God" is capable of looking after who hears about it.

It's also an interesting idea that Christian proselytizing is seen as such a physical and emotional threat that violence is the response.

chriswho,
@chriswho@mstdn.social avatar

@thepoliticalcat I was in parish ministry for about 12 years, and while I know the history the reality on the ground was infinitely worse. A physical, emotional and spiritual invasion which, as you said, set the tone for resource theft and ultimately extermination in many cases.

Honestly, as an older white guy raised in Canada I don't think I'll ever truly get it. The barbarity of what we did here in Canada still shocks me, although it doesn't surprise me. 1/2

chriswho,
@chriswho@mstdn.social avatar

@thepoliticalcat The more I learned about it, the more I tried to use my privilege in society and the church to advance refugee claims, family reunification and social justice issues. I personally believe that if you're not using what you've been given sacrificially - giving away your privilege to help others - then one is simply useless and living on the backs of the oppressed

It should be said that there is no atoning for what the church has done because there's no words for its crimes. 2/2

I apologize if my posts are somewhat down and grim.

I feel like the folks who haven't been facing the sharp end of injustice in the last 50 years don't understand how close we are to global authoritarian rule.

I'm Canadian. Even if we vote Green or Progressive, being a resource rich, militarily poor nation next door to a failed state is terrifying.

A lot more is on the line than just US domestic issues.

chriswho, to random
@chriswho@mstdn.social avatar

I've seen a number of people in the US say they'll just move to Democratically controlled states or cities.

The New Confederacy will recognize state lines?

I'm starting to think that most of the US things they're wading ankle deep in authoritarian fascism when in fact they're treading water neck deep.

This really goes two ways. Trump is elected and it ends, or Biden gets the vote and then the New Confederacy comes out with guns out, and the US finishes what wasn't finished in the Civil War

the geese have learned to block traffic. on a 25-30mph residential street, most drivers will slow down and stop to let a goose cross the road - if not out of compassion, because hitting an animal that large will probably mess up your car. yesterday we observed 3 instances of geese stepping in front of traffic, and instead of crossing the street, standing still or sitting down in the road until the cars were forced to go around them. the geese have discovered their power and i can't wait to see what they do with it next

If seagulls and sea lions get in on this we might have a big big problem which we, quite frankly, deserve.

And these are the before and after pictures of the cast metal frame. I used deoxit and an old cloth and cotton buds to remove the dirt and cover the metal at the same time with the deoxit, which usually gives a very thin coating that will protect the metal. Smells horribly though. :)
I think I will need to lube the top and bottom ball bearings of the spindle. The top one I can reach easily. For the bottom one I probably have to unmount the flywheel, but I don't want to...

A much cleaner metal frame, with significantly less visible corrosion
