We all know the "free software" vs. the corporate "open source" split. But if the last years showed something it is that only using "freedom" as a fundamental principle isn't doing enough, it's just too limited.

If we want our communities to build software for a "common good" we might need to start thinking about other fundamental values and reframe "FLOSS" into something more goal oriented.

We need to integrate ideas of inclusion and environmentalism, about harm reduction and overcoming internalized colonialism that have shaped so many projects and communities (including to a degree the fediverse).

"Freedom" always sounds good and useful but it's just not enough, it's not tangible enough, to open for being captured by right wing narratives.

clayton,

@tante 💯 this is why I've been drawn more and more to the framing of community tech. It combines the value of freedom with that of care. I've got a half-baked blog post I need to finish about its difference from open-source but here are some good resources on the concept

Just wrapped up DrupalCamp Colorado. This was the first one I've attended since the pandemic. It was really nice catching up with old friends. And there's talk of bringing the Denver Meetup back in person. I would love that. Might even help make it happen...

"A Global Web of Chinese Propaganda Leads to a U.S. Tech Mogul: The Times unraveled a financial network that stretches from Chicago to Shanghai and uses American nonprofits to push Chinese talking points worldwide." Pretty shocking allegations about Roy Singham (founder of Thoughtworks).

    clayton,

@brainwane yikes. I know some folks who've worked at Thoughtworks over the years. I'll be interested to hear their reactions to this.

I really enjoy blog post updates about projects like the one that @ultimike wrote for the Smart Trim module.

    • A practical run down of recent improvements made
    • A more personal, behind-the-scenes look at the individuals who helped
    • A heads up as to what's next

And I really like the vision of keeping the module's feature set simple, focusing instead on accessibility and stability.

I still get the post(ish)-pandemic fuzzy, anticipatory feels when I'm able to be in community face to face with folks.

I'm very much looking forward to hanging with my fellow nerds. 💙

They're on the Fediverse and their site has no paywall. So refreshing.

What's everyone's favorite podcast app? I used Stitcher and it's shutting down. I loved it's show grouping, so I could easily play my short form morning shows easily.

I've also owned casterradio.app for a long time and considered building my own. Because developers always be developers.

@dansup @trwnh doing mock interviews ahead of time with friends is a great way to get comfortable and sort out your thoughts on questions. I highly recommend it!

In a world filled with countless websites, it's often the little things that make a big difference. With Drupal, getting these details right has never been easier. Example: naturally ordered lists. https://agaric.coop/blog/display-lists-naturally-other-words-module-drupal

    clayton,

@dries Thanks for the shout out! Yes and oftentimes these little things come up repeatedly. Since we reached a stable release, I've used it on 3 out of the 4 projects I've started on.

One client was reviewing a wireframe I designed and they said, "Oh would it be much trouble if the authors were listed without the Oxford comma? Our content style guide doesn't use them."

So fun to be able to reply,
"Why in fact I help maintain a module where that is just the check of a box!"

There's a lot of talk in the world recently about the and frankly I'm not sure I love it.

    https://www.drupal.org/open-web-manifesto

IMO, there's too much focus on easy access for all and not enough on meaningful consequences for people & groups that exploit an open web for purposes of hate, exploitation, or abuse.

While that might be beyond Drupal's role in the open web, I think it's important to acknowledge & discuss

    clayton,

    @pcambra @andy_blum @dries

Yes, I filled out that survey. In hindsight I wish I had helped spread the word more about it.

In my survey response I made exactly the points you brought up Andy - that an Open Web needs to acknowledge the paradox of intolerance and for it to be an open web that protects and advances the rights and well-being of the marginalized.

There is the line about diversity, but I think that's too implicit.

Overall, I'm glad a manifesto exists but I hope it gets updated.

One of the many empowering things about decentralized social media like Mastodon is that you can block entire instances for your personal account.

I think that's an important power to remember we have as individuals as we discuss things like

    clayton, to LGBTQ

Pantheon, a web hosting platform, refuses to kick hate groups like the Alliance Defending Freedom off of its platform in the name of the "Open Web."

The ADF are the ones who brought forth the bigot web designer just ruled is allowed to refuse service to the community, which opens the door to business refusing service to protected classes of people in general.

You can't have an open web that permits hate and oppression.

The democratization of AI ushers in a new era of competitive content discovery and relevance algorithms that were previously only available to the big players.

What you can do on device with ML apis is mindblowing, and I'm here for it 🚀

    clayton,

@dansup what democratization of AI is happening? My understanding was that the large datasets and computing power needed with AI inherently centralizes that space. Would love to be proven wrong though!
