Any fans out there in the ?

Based on a friend's recommendation, I bought a slightly used Lenovo Duet 5 8gb.128gb to use as a "focus" device for the writing and CMS management I do for our website (Wordpress/Elementor).

It takes some getting used to, with most of my work previously done in a MacOS environment (no iPads tho - I use a Samsung S6 Lite tablet and Pixel 7 Pro phone).

Any power user tips for someone new to Chromebooks? Accounts to follow? Youtubers?

We don't just have and articles on CoffeeGeek. We do occasional news, opinion articles, and we also feature creative writing about coffee culture. And we're always looking for guest writers who can contribute this kind of content.

One thing I want to try and publish more are travelogue type articles and casual historical looks at .

A recent article that fits this bill is Ethan McGonigal's look at and its history in .

Folks. . Mastodon users. Coffee lovers.

Contact Roast Magazine and their blog service, Daily Coffee News, and suggest to them they really need to get on Mastodon, posting important stuff like this. Roaster of the year is a big deal.

Their post on Tweeter garnered exactly one re-tweet, and 6 "likes". When Roast Mag retweeted it, zero reposts, zero likes.

Twitter is dead to specialty coffee.

Had a back and forth with a fellow person regarding the $ entry point for and just now.

Espresso is expensive. Very expensive in many cases.

But you can get into quality espresso at a very low entry point. The key is a good grinder. $200 is the entry on electric. But there's also excellent hand grinders, designed for espresso, around $100 or less. Like 's offerings.

I don't just use $10,000 espresso machines to make great tasting .

You can make espresso that sings with $450 machines ( Classic 1st photo), even $250 machines ( XP series, 2nd photo).

It takes a good grinder (lots of $200 grinders out there that are excellent), good coffee, and good technique. Our website helps you make this journey.

Check these two out:

Regarding the Rancilio Silvia Pros: solid machines, but really let down by the hard-connection between steam boiler pump and the boiler. Makes the machine rattle and screetch something fierce.

I'm temped to do a mod to each myself before listing them for sale; a $50 mod plus some elbow grease would increase the value by several hundred dollars, no doubt.

A bit of a technical problem / issue with Mastodon, I wonder if anyone has a solution - it's a browser issue.

On MacOS, on Brave, things look like the left, on Flipboard's instance. On Firefox, like the right: note every font is bold, and a bit more difficult to read.

Any way to make Firefox look like the Brave/Chrome version?

coffeegeek,
@coffeegeek@flipboard.social avatar

@josh Which settings? the browser's settings, mastodon's settings?

coffeegeek,
@coffeegeek@flipboard.social avatar

@josh The thing is, every other website looks fine and identical in Firefox when compared to Brave. Flipboard's mastodon web page is the only one that is showing this bold font everywhere.

coffeegeek,
@coffeegeek@flipboard.social avatar

@josh Went through all those first before posting - couldn't find anything about bold. Also weird: if I visit your mastodon instance, it's the same issue - everything is bolded (and I'm not logged into your instance, so no settings to set?)

Just weird. It's literally only happening on Mastodon hosted pages, this bold font. It's even bold in the compose window:

OH.
MY.
GOD.

The #coffee tree in our home, one my wife grew from seeds (unprocessed coffee cherries from a friend in Hawaii), after 12 years of growing,

HAS ONE CHERRY FORMED. First time ever!

OMG.

I cannot believe how excited this makes me feel.

(yes, it's a straggly tree. It's also 11 feet tall :) and growing in a north facing window)

@kentbrew That's fantastic! And also a bit of a sad tale showing how difficult coffee is to grow. I have friends growing coffee in Hawaii and they tell me all the time the various difficulties.

@NaturaArtisMagistra I always see little starter coffee plants for sale at various garden stores, even big box stores (Lowes, Canadian Tire, Home Depot) in their gardening centres. The plants are usually robusta bushes / trees because it's a hardier type.

Another busy day!

  1. Completed removal of all Twitter integration on CoffeeGeek.com (I think... there was a lot, buried here and there).

  2. Another solid 2 hours testing of the Classic EVO Pro machine. Lots of temp surfing.

  3. Working on the backbone of CoffeeGeek a bit: we're revising the structure of the website, an on going, months long project (shifting to Flexbox)

  4. Able to do the photo session for the Breville Infuser machine.

And it's Thanksgiving Monday!

I still have the pen my Mum (passed away too early in 2004) bought me as a graduation gift when I completed my Masters studies at UBC in 1996.

I still use it almost every day, and treat it with kid gloves. It's a Mont Blanc Noblesse Oblige ball point pen. Currently rocking MB's Amethyst Purple ink refill in it.

This pen is used for all my handwritten review notes for CoffeeGeek.

Speaking of that old video... here it is... "A Walkthrough with the Rancilio Silvia" posted 16 years ago (hence the crap vid quality).

This introduced the idea of "temperature surfing" to a lot of people; it had nearly half a million views in the first 3 years it was up on a very young Youtube.

Just re-watched it myself - I guess it sort of still stands up. I can only imagine WDT would have helped! :)

coffeegeek,
@coffeegeek@flipboard.social avatar

This video also has mixed feelings for me, of missed opportunities. I knew it was a crazy popular watch, knew it was really crappy quality, and I knew I could shoot a much better, more "pro" version of the vid, going back to 2008, 2009...

But I did not. Combination of laziness, not great video skills, procrastination.

I always, always regret not re-shooting this video to make it a lot better and more informative.

Another day, and more testing, note taking, evaluation, and parameters-testing of the Classic Evo Pro machine.

Ahhh... I had almost forgotten how to 'temperature surf", something I helped popularize on a very early (like 1rst six months of it existing) youtube with an old Rancilio Silvia video, way back when :)

The Gaggia Classic Evo Pro definitely needs temperature surfing. ;)

@kierkegaank LOL! Not a bad idea. One thing already comes to mind: the $475 Moonraker from Weber. (they "borrowed " the design from Etsy 3d Printer folks who sell similar thngs for $50 or less).
